Question

Cemeteries are among the most valuable of historic resources. They can serve as reminders of various settlement patterns, or they can reveal information about historic events, religions, lifestyles, and most importantly, our genealogy. Unfortunately, these cemeteries do not necessarily remain permanent reminders of our ancestors and past since they are subject to long-term deterioration, neglect, development activities and construction projects, and even vandalism and theft.

Volunteers in the Cemeterist Project are helping to preserve the world's cemeteries. Volunteers are currently needed for photography or indexing. You can help in any way that suits you! Will you join us?

Hello:  I recently travelled to the border region of Scotland and England to research and find graves of my ancestors.  I took photos and have some memorial inscriptions.  I would like to start to document the graves I have found and the location of the cemeteries.

Sure  I'm in.   I was looking at the map and  it didn't seem to show St. Marys Cemetery  in East Brunswick, NJ off of Cranberry road.  Also.   Is there a way to set it up so after we add birth and death place info in the profiles  we might also add the burial place?  and have it link to the cemetery map

Hi, I'm interested in helping! I have volunteer experience with USGS National Map Corps, plus have been documenting (including GPS grave coordinates) and constantly correcting burial memorials on Find-A-Grave, Billion Graves, etc. of mainly Eastern European immigrants in the US, Canada and some abroad. I'm fluent in Ukrainian and can read Cyrillic inscriptions (Belarusian, Ruthenian, Rusyn, Russian, and some others). Especially enjoy decifering old pre-1918, Russian Empire immigrant headstones.

If there's a way I can help, please LMK. I'm looking for a better way to contribute without having to deal with the constant issues on Find-A-Grave with memorial managers who care more about their stats than the quality of their work. Not to mention that most think they own their memorials.

I've been reading more about what is expected for a cemeterist's project, and I think it's a lot more involved than the type of project I had in mind. I'm still working on records for that cemetery and the church it was attached to, but I don't think I'd like to go forward with a formal project. I'll just quietly do my stuff in the background.
