My father, Dr. Jerry E. King, was an anesthesiologist who was quite passionate about his work. I was named after his favorite scrub nurse and the patron saint of anesthesiologists. Could be worse, had Daddy been a psychiatrist I could have been named Dymphna.
I was named after my grand father Robert Gerrish and my father Paul Gerrish so I am Robert Paul Gerrish.  My wife and I thought this was a nice tradition but we preferred using grandparents. Our first child was named Elizabeth Rose after her grandmothers.  Our second after her great grandmothers so she is Christina Anne, but her personality turned out that the other two great grandmother's would have fit her better had we used Bertha Grace.  Our third child is named after his grandfathers Paul Jacob.
I was named after Suellen O'Hara from Gone With The Wind.  My mom was reading the book when I was born and like the name.

I don't really know where my first name came from. My mum was initially dead set on the forenames John Thomas, without knowing the implications of said forenames (John Thomas is/was, I think not massively circulated, slang for penis). My father was not happy at all and I'm assuming nobody had any better suggestions because the names got swapped in order, and the middle name swapped out for a different middle name. None of the names seem to have any link to any logical family member at all.

I know my father's middle name - James - was directly after his maternal great-grandfather, James Albert Gurney.

I have interesting stories on my mother's side. My grandmother named her eldest child Georgina almost entirely on a whim, without considering that her father-in-law Robert had a brother George, which led to some misunderstandings about the child being named after the uncle-in-law rather than the father-in-law and hurt feelings as to why.

My grandfather wanted his mother's first name to be the middle name but my grandmother didn't think it flowed well and suggested "something like Louise" without any thought. Grandfather disappeared, came back, said he had sent out cards, my grandmother said "but we haven't decided on a middle name yet" and he said "I thought you said Louise" and at that point it was too late for her to do anything about it.

Meanwhile my mother - Barbara Anne - was named almost entirely after my grandmother's favourite song (spelt slightly differently) after a lack of any input from my grandfather. Very interestingly, though there were no immediate relatives with these names, when you dig into my grandmother's family history the names George and Barbara both seem to crop up VERY often if you go back far enough.

My mom and dad made sure to NOT name us after anyone in the family! Mom is name Etta and dad is named Rex, so they wanted anything other than old fashioned names and family names since they were all old fashioned.  I ended up with Christine Camile and my sister was Paula Jean.  Thank goodness we weren't named from the family!

I'm named after the Zachariah from the Bible apparently. My family is not religious so I don't know why.

The more interesting answer is my brother. First name from author Matthew Riley, middle name from Raiden, the character in Mortal Kombat.

I do not know.  And my parents are both dead.  I wish I would have thought of this question while they were alive...

There are no Leifs in my family, but one of my great-great-grandfathers was named Ellef Abrahamsen. I'm not sure if the names Leif and Ellef come from the same root, but given my mother's propensity for playing with words, I'm almost certain that she made this invention. I never got around to ask her.

Ellef Abrahamsen's maternal grandfather was Ellef Engelsen, named after his great-grandfather Ellef Trulsen (abt. 1661-1735). By then, we're so far back that the sources start to get real rickety, but there were certainly Ellefs in the family before that.

As an adoptee I have no idea where my first given name came from as in all the research undertaken there is no one with that name. When adopted some time later I was given the name Christine which it turns out was influenced by a character in a popular radio programme in UK at the time..  My adoptive parents also had a cat called Captain - again a name from the radio programme "The  Archers " ( which is still on BBC radio 4 in 2022!)

It was obviously a popular choice as when I started school there were 12 other Christines in the class!

My father stated that my first name comes from my 3rd great grandfather, Freeborn Garrettson Milk/Milks (Milk-116), but I suspect it actually was from my 2nd great grandfather, Robert Garret Barnes (Barnes-15580). At the time, Dad wasn't yet into genealogy so the name was probably suggested by our aunts who were.

My middle name is shared with my father and grandfather.

Hmmm....tough question to answer. I wonder if the suffix "Jr." on my full name offers me any clues?

I am named after my maternal grandfather, who had died a few years before I was born. There are other David's in my family tree but that is the one I was specifically named after.

I was named for my aunt Ada. She was actually my maternal grandmother’s aunt. She died just a few years before I was born.

My dad used to tell a story that he wanted to name me Christine Eve because of my birthday on December 24th. I escaped this fate because my mom reminded him that it was not a great name for a Jewish girl. However, this is entirely untrue and just shows how my dad liked to make up stories.

I was named June for father's uncle Junius who was called "June". Dad said that he was going to call his first child "June" even if girl. To complicate the name, I was born, weeks after due date, in seventh month. Uncle Junius was a civil war veteran who was shot in the leg running from guns at Fredericksburg. Smart him, he survived, with a limp.

I was named after a close friend of my father who died in WW II.  His name was Lynn Farnham.  He was from central New York.  I visited his family several times when I was young.  He had several brothers who also served in the War.  My Dad’s name was Kenneth.

My Filipino maternal grandmother always assumed I was named after her. I guess to a non-native English speaker Melagrina and Melissa are close enough.

The truth? My mother named me after a character on her favorite soap, General Hospital. Missy was, according to my mom, "The only nice one."

I'd love to know if there are any GH devotees from 1974 who can confirm or dispute this!

by Melissa Gridley G2G5 (5.6k points)

My late brother-in-law would have know without looking it up, I bet. EVERY day at 3:00 p.m. he would pull his chair up directly in front the TV to watch "General Hospital." I've never known of another man to be so addicted to a soap. I used Google, however, and, yes, there was a character named Melissa in the 80s. A summary of her character's "life" can be found at Travel Guide to General Hospital.

But, I guess that couldn't have been the right Melissa, since you were born before that Melissa appeared on the show. I'll look some more.

Some form of Ann has been in my maternal line for at least 5 generations. My gr-grandma was Annie Lily, grandma was Annie Betty, mom is Betty Ann, I’m Rebecca Ann, and my niece is ShyAnne. Both gr-gr-gr-grandmas in that line have A as a middle initial, but I haven’t been able to figure  out whether they stand for Ann.
