What to do about possible spammers?

+11 votes
I have received a personal message from a person who appears to be a spammer.  The message is not relevant to anything or anyone in my tree and his/her profile does not appear to be authentic. What to do about this?

I delete without any other action any emails I get that

1) I don't recognize
2) Claim to be just like Oprah uses
3) Offer companionship.
Hi Mike

I got one of those too.  I did just what Dennis recommends below. Then I spammed it in my email programme.

When you get an e-mail through the WikiTree system from a non-member, or from a member who isn't logged in, the system adds a note to it saying if the message appears to be bulk spam, you should forward it to info@wikitree.com.  If your spam came from another logged in member, and you question his profile, I would suggest forwarding it to the same address and explain your concern and rationale.  Someone on the team will follow up.

I also wanted to mention to not put your email address in your profile.  Allow users to contact you through Wiki messaging system.  I had my email in my profile and sure enough I get a message from someone who said they got my email from Wikitree ... their name was ____ and they were dislocated from Syria wanting to get to their bank account, but _____ (you can guess the rest.)

Needless to say, I removed my email and blocked that person. :)

In addition to don't put email on your profile, don't put it on the G2G
