Why can't I add a name when there is a similar name?

I tried to add a name to my tree and was not allowed because there was another name similar to the one that I wanted to add. Mine had nothing to do with the other one but I still was stopped from adding it to my tree. I had to contact the owner of the other tree first. I am not happy about this because the dates alone should have allowed me to add my person.

Nancy, did you encounter a page asking you if any of these were  your person?  You do not have to choose one of them, but may initiate a new profile, even though the name is identical.
