Did John Atwood have any children?

+6 votes

The wikitree profile for John Atwood, the Plymouth Colony Assistant Governor who died in 1644, shows nine children.  However, the History of the Atwood Family states:  "John Atwood, who came to Plymouth about 1635... he had no children, died in 1644."  See https://archive.org/stream/historyofatwoodf00atwo#page/10/mode/2up

Is there any reason NOT to detach all of his nine alleged children?

I used that ''History of the Atwood Family'' as a major source for profiles for the author and some of his relatively close relatives (siblings, parents, aunts and uncles, nieces and nephews, grandparents, etc.), but it didn't appear to me to be awfully reliable for the earlier history of the family. (The author seemed to be enthusiastic about documenting a distinguished family history in England.) If there are public records that are inconsistent with that publication, I'd go with the records.

Philip Atwood, one of the alleged sons of this John Atwood, is profiled in Andersion's The Great Migration, Volume I (pages 104-106). Anderson did not find any evidence regarding parents for Philip.
