Should John Symonds be PGM? Does Anderson's Directory have an entry for him? Birth? LNAB? [closed]

He is "John Simmons" aka "Simonds" in Genealogical Dictionary of Maine and New Hampshire (GDMNH, 5:633-34). John married (2) the widow Welthen (____) Goddard; Anderson calls him "John Simons" in the sketch about John Goddard (GM2 87, AmericanAncestors).

There are two WikiTree profiles about him, see John Symonds (Symonds-1647) and John Simmons (Simmons-12876)

(1) Should he be PGM? According to GDMNH, John was of Kittery, but at Richmond Island by 1635 (left in 1636 "with other disaffected men," but returned). "His Kit. land adj. to that laid out to Robert Beedle in May, 1641." (GDMNH, 5:633-34)

(2) Directory? Whether as John Simmons, Simons, Symonds, did Anderson include an entry for John in The Great Migration Directory

(3) Birth? WikiTree profiles about about him are in conflict as to his date of birth.  Simmons-12876 reports his birth as 1600, while Symonds-1647 has 1620. According to GDMNH, John testified in as to his age twice--he was age +/- 47 in June 1662 and +/- 52 in December 1669, so born about 1615 or 1617. Shall we say 1616?

(4) LNAB? Symonds-1647 and Simmons-12876 are set as an unmerged match. Is there a WikiTree consensus as to his LNAB? (His only known child is WikiTree's Rebecca Simmons (Simmons-12875)--she married William^2 Hilton (Edward^1).

See Sybil Noyes, Charles Thornton Libby and Water Goodwin Davis, Genealogical Dictionary of Maine and New Hampshire, in five parts (The Southward Press, Portland, Maine, Southworth Press, 1928-1938)', 5:633-34 (John Simmons/Simonds); digital images, FamilySearch Books.

Anderson lists on page 305 of The Directory.... John Simmons of Unknown origins, arrived 1635 to Richmond Island and Piscataqua, citing Trelawny 93, 98; GDMNH 633-34.

Edited to add: there are no John Simons or similar derivations with just one M shown in the book

Thank you, Sharon.

I'll add the project box now.

Simmons-12876 was merged earlier today into Symonds-1647; his date of birth has also been updated.

I think we have a wrap on this one.

Thank you. --Gene

RCA gives us two men of this name. One is apparently only mentioned in connection with the death of a daughter. NEHGR 3:248.

The other: Symonds, John: Great Yarmouth, Norfolk, 1636; Salem [Str 1:24; SChR 7; EQC 1:3; NEHGR 96:205; Dudley Wildes 129-31].

The profile for the one from Norfolk is likely this one: John Symonds

Thank you Todd and Sharon.

Hoped he would be there. He is also an early arrival as per Everett S. Stackpole, Old Kittery and her Families  (1903), 33 (John Symonds); digital images, Hathi Trust

"John Symonds came in 1634 and was in the employ of John Winter in 1636."

Todd,

Thank you.

Sorry to trouble, but are you able to check again, maybe under the spelling Simmons or Simons? --Gene

Nothing under Simons in GMD. There is this: Simmons, John: Unknown; 1635; Richmond Island, Piscataqua [Trelawny 93, 98; GDMNH 633-234].

Ah, I see Sharon had already given this info. Didn't see it above. surprise
