Hi everyone!

Meet_our_Members_Photos-38.jpgIt's time to get to know another one of our wonderful WikiTreers. This week's member is Azure Robinson.

Azure became a Wiki Genealogist in April of 2018. She is one of our Project Leaders and one of the busiest WikiTreers around, as you'll see below!

When and how did you get interested in genealogy?

Being ill during childhood, a lot of time was spent with the adults and listening in to their discussions - hearing family stories and imagining the personalities and lives of ancestors was a favorite pastime. Specifically, my fatherpaternal aunt, and a maternal great-aunt were the ones who were instrumental in piquing my interest in and love for genealogy.

What are some of your interests outside of genealogy?

Outside of genealogy, some hobbies include being an amateur photographer, road-trip enthusiast, and an avid reader of romance, mystery, and biographies.

What is your genealogical research focus?

Currently focusing on volunteering time helping others with their genealogy through multiple projects: Religion sub-project: Jehovah’s WitnessesUSBH - Family BuildersScotland - Tartan Trail GuideScotland - ClanPaisleyONS - PaisleyPeasleyIhdaOPS - Peaslee GarrisonBethel HouseAndersoniaDawson, and RatonCemeterist - Fairmont Cemetery, Raton, NM

When I first started, my main focus was in researching some of our family brickwalls, one of which was my maternal great-grandfather, George Ferris Anderson, who was Robert Harrison while married to my great-grandmother! After all of her life not knowing for sure who he was, my mother now knows about this man through DNA and genealogical research. Recently, I was able to connect with my mother’s cousins who were very excited by this information as they also had been searching for years. It is still my favorite genealogical story and breakthrough.

Are you are interested in certain surnames or locations?

Currently, the surname focus is on Paisley/Peasley. Another WikiTreer and I are working on an article about our ancestor, Joseph Peasley 1598-1660 a Quaker and one of the main progenitors of the Peasley line in America, for the Clan Paisley Newsletter for this fall.

Location focus genealogically is on my hometown of Raton, New Mexico. Last fall a request for a Facebook group for those interested in the genealogy and history of Raton was created. It now has almost 1k members interested in the work being done on the town OPS and the cemetery study of Fairmont Cemetery. This cemetery has over 6k burials and I’m only about 35% done with adding profiles. The photos are all taken so if anyone is interested in assisting with adding profiles, they would be most welcome!

What is your toughest brick wall currently?

My toughest brickwall is my paternal great-great-grandfather, John Christoper Boushon. So many unknowns with this gentleman. The variations of his name alone is frustrating, Aumen Boushon, Aubuchon, Almond Boushon... Then, we have his birthplace, France, not sure if this is “New France” or really, France. All the evidence we have for him is a brief mention in a book and on his children’s death certificates. He also may be in the 1870 census with his bride’s family prior to their marriage in 1871. The death date we have for him (1879) is from family trees.

How long have you been on WikiTree? What brought you here and why did you start getting involved?

A Google search for an ancestor brought me to WikiTree back in April of 2018. Immediately intrigued by the ‘wiki’ aspect, that it was free, and that there were projects around names, locations, and subjects. One of the first projects I joined (2019) was Data Doctors as it helped me learn more about the way the site worked and the best practices. In 2020, I joined the Greeters as a way to give back and help new members.

What do you spend the most time doing on WikiTree?

Most of my time on WikiTree is spent adding profiles for the various projects and trying to connect them to the global tree. It’s a way to give back and it is so rewarding - building one free global tree so that everyone has access to their family history and genealogy.

What is your favorite feature or function on WikiTree?

There are so many awesome features, tools, and apps, it’s hard to narrow it down. I guess I’d say that Rob Pavey’s Sourcerer app is top of the list of apps right now, it saves so much time! And, Connections is my favorite feature, being able to see your connections to a category and all the tabs available to us now on My Connections!

What feature or function would you most like to see added or improved?

One area I think could be utilized and grown is the Source Library. Adding the source citation linking back to the space page with all the information about that free online book, including the multiple locations it may be available at, and then see all the profiles that are using that source is amazing! The Peaslee and Others of Haverhill and Vicinity is one example in the Family Genealogies section of this amazing resource.

Do you have a story about how someone has helped you through WikiTree?

Debi Hoag and Mindy Silva were so helpful and encouraging. Preparing for the Pre-1500 certification, Michael Cayley and Mindy Silva coached me through a few profiles and the application.

The work done on the Grenia/Grenier line of my tree done by Sheila Beardslee was instrumental in breaking down the brick wall of my ancestor, Joseph Grenier (1794). Prior to finding this work, the birth location and surname for him was incorrect so was hindering progress.

Do you have any tips for someone who wants to get more involved in our community?

There are so many opportunities for involvement in the community at WikiTree. I’d suggest getting to know other WikiTreers by taking part in the Weekend Chat and/or becoming a Greeter. Look into starting a project trail to learn about your area of interest. Don’t be afraid to ask questions or to make a mistake. Taking part in one a community or project challenge is another way to meet others and learn how to navigate and use the site.

What could we do to inspire more people to participate in our mission?

I’m excited to be helping with increasing the visibility of WikiTree on social media. Anyone who is has a social media account can help spread the word by joining the conversations on FacebookTwitterInstagram, and LinkedIn.

Congratulations, Azure, and thank you for all you do for our tree.  Your mention of the Source Library inspired me to visit that wonderful resource.  I enjoyed your descriptions of your brickwall success and your remaining wall.  Thank you.

Neat, Azure, welcome to the family.
Our mutual ancestor Claes, https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Swits-12 started a war, when he was killed by a Wickquasgeck man in revenge for the killing of a relative, 15 years earlier. https://www.newyorkalmanack.com/2020/07/kiefts-war-against-native-people-a-primer/
Wow, thanks for sharing, Mark! Really need to take some time to check out those New Netherlands lines!

It was great learning more about you Azure and all the things we have in common. I also didn't know we shared French Canadian family! It's been great working with you in USBH. All that you have already done with the social media has been mind blowing.

What Emma said! It's so great to have you on the team. You and I are also 10th cousins once removed. Those crazy French Canadians strike again!

YAY! I'm happy to see you here as well, though honestly, I thought you might have done this in the past already because you are so prolific with your projects and presence on the wiki (that was very alliterative right there!). MUCH CONGRATULATIONS on being WikiTreer of the Week! Thank you so much for your collaboration and enthusiasm.

Hi Asure, thank you for the glimpse into your wonderful background and WikiTree activities! It is interesting to read of your French Canadian ancestry. I am working on my former husband's maternal ancestry this past week and it is pure early on "New France' French Canadian. And I fully agree about Debi, Mindy and Michael being such wonderful support people. It is all about connecting!

BTW, we are 9th cousins through MRCA Nathaniel Holcombe!

Congratulations Azure!  Great interview - and - wow - you are doing so much for WikiTree!  We're very lucky to have you!  We are 9th cousins once removed - hi cousin!  But, even cooler, the two of us, along with Emma MacBeath and Chris Ferraiolo - all share the same French Canadian ancestor - so all cousins from the same distant line, that is Pierre Bissonnette, born in France about 1626, then came to Nouvelle-France.   Have a great week Azure!  Enjoy all the well-deserved praise.

Thanks, Greg! lovely to find another cousin! az :)

Fun fact:  Azure, you are 8th cousins with the 1941 Tournament of Roses Queen, Sally Stanton!

From one Robinson to another.

This was an amazing interview! I'm glad you're helping out with USBH-Family Builders!

I'm originally from Tucson, Arizona and have never heard of Raton, NM. I've looked on Google Maps; Raton, NM is about a 150 minute drive from Santa Fe. That's pretty cool.

Isn't it fun to attempt to break down brick walls?

Welcome and thank you for sharing some of your interests and your story.  I am sorry to hear of your medical problems during childhood.  It is a curious thing... sometimes a negative situation can lead to a positive one (like genealogy) if we chose to take the steps to make it happen.  I am happy you came to WikiTree.
