This startled me when I read it on the team page for the challenge: "All added profiles must have at least one primary source (Ancestry, Family Search, and Geni are not sources. Think documents here.)."  You mean the trees on that site are not sources, correct?

I think so.  The trees are entered by the public (as are the entries om here) who may have a source or may have just assumed they had found the right person.  If you have access to the paywall sites you can check if the entry is sourced and pick up the source reference.  If you don't  have access to the paywall sites then FamilySearch can be used, which similarly if the entry is properly sourced will give you a link to it.  On the source there is a button to copy the source to the clipboard in the right format.  The point is the the bare words (Ancestry, Family Search, and Geni) are not sources.  You need a properly formatted citation.  I asked a similar question last time (c.f. https://www.wikitree.com/g2g/1341809/team-roses-chat-january-2022-connect-a-thon, the 3rd answer).

You can find theformat for citations here https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:Foundations_OT_-_Citation_templates

Ancestry, Geni, and Family Search in themselves are not sources. People often put "ancestry.com" as a source or yes, a link to an Ancestry tree or profile. For these challenges we should always be using documents as our sources since there are plenty to be had :-)
Is anyone using this G2G forum thread.  It seems redundant when we have Discord where all the action seems to be.  If no one needs this for help, then I'll stop monitiring it and close the window,
JG -- there will always be those who do not, or can not, use discord.  Or maybe they watch threads such as this one, but aren't especially chatty.

What are you doing in here Melanie smiley

Aren't you busy with your wizards?

I have monitored both Discord and G2G on the run up to the challenge and both have been quiet.  Discord has burst into life today but this one is still morribund.  It is just that I have so many windows open I am getting confused.  I can always be contacted by email via my profile.

I'm a Tortoise, with a Wizard Hat.    I ride the Slow Train.

As such, I float around, poking my nose in anywhere it'll fit.   cheeky

I have six separate edge windows open, with multiple tabs in each.  I also have five opera windows open, also with multiple tabs.  Add to those, three different text files. cheeky

OK, I can't complain about one extra tab then.  But then I am male and can't multi-task like a female can.

Gotta be able to research on multiple sites.  If I'm working on Scottish or English people, I need the GRO and ScotlandsPeople open.  I need FamilySearch open, because if I find sources I will attach them to a profile on FS, before using the citations on WT.  I have my Tortoises space page open, G2G, email, Find a Grave, etc,  Oh, and a tab for youtube (three tabs for that -- one for whatever my current "police procedural" is (right now it's Sue Thomas FB Eye), one for an Ellery Queen movie (because I am reaching the point of recognising the dialogue on Sue Thomas (and if I'm researching I can't actually watch the videos, and because it involves a LOT of signing, I need to watch)), and one prepped ready for the next 'Thon hangout.  It may be time to re-up Time Team -- I always seem to do better research while listening to those.  laugh

Like Melanie said, a few people don't have Discord, so we have this chat. Don't worry about monitoring JG. I'll get emails if anyone messages here since I created the post.

"I'll get emails if anyone messages here since I created the post."   Ah!   (Winnie the Pooh mode off - bear with little brain).

I see we still are a bit short on numbers, but registration has only just opened, so hopeful the others will be along in a minute.

I have a question.  "Where did the idea of TEAM ROSES come from?"  I know that the full expression is "a rose by any other name", but why that.  When I joined I assumed that Team Roses was to do with the houses of York and Lancaster and joined because my wife's family came from Lancashire and mine came from Yorkshire.  I still keep this association in my mind in memory of my wife but I am curious as to the real derivation.

How our team name came about is an old story. Back in 2017, I formed the team specifically to work on naming errors because the team's first challenge was during the clean-a-thon. There were 60,000 naming errors in just one category that I was trying to obliterate (those are now all gone. Yay!). And since I'm always overly poetic, I chose "A Rose by Any Other Name." also because I'm a MacBeath and that's a Shakespeare quote and he wrote MacBeth. Sometimes I think way too hard! :-D  But now we could say we are Team Roses because we always come up smelling like roses. LOL

Thanks for the reply and the explanation Emma.  I enjoyed reading it, in fact I think it would not be out of place on the team page.

You can't be overly poetic; that's what makes us human.

"we always come up smelling like roses"

Maybe not this time. numbers are a bit thin and we have lost two stalwart members to other teams.  Still it is the taking part that matters, not the winning.  That is just the icing.

I registered last night.   Have lots of family members to add to  a lot of the profiles I have been adding the past month or two.
by Carolyn Martin G2G6 Pilot (283k points)
Bear in mind that only connections to existing profiles count.  If you have a family and none of them have a profile, then add one person from the family beforehand.  Then the rest  will all count when you add them in the thon.

If you run out of new people to create profiles for you could try this technique.

Find one of your ancestors for which you have a census image.  Scroll the image and look for other families in the same street, particularly large ones.  Add the father as a new person.  Check through the suggestions to make sure he has not already been added.  If not go ahead and then add the rest of his family.  If he already has a profile check his family against the census return to make sure none have been missed.

Another way to do this is to pick a name at random and search the census collections at Family Search looking for large families. Then follow the above procedure.
by JG Weston G2G6 Mach 2 (28.8k points)
The searching can be done in advance, just noting links of potential census entries.  In the thon you just have to check that the person hasn't been entered between when you found the entry and the thon.

If you follow the Discord team thread you will see that Emma has asked for co-captains as she is rather busy this year, and will find it difficult to do the required Admin without impacting her score.  Since she is our best participant we need to help all we can.  I have been monitoring the G2G sign up thread to find the volunteers (I hope I haven't missed any) but Emma was most concerned on coverage of the chats in case anyone needed help and raised an issue there.  I don't do video chats (and some of them happen while i'm asleep),but I will be monitoring this thread and the Disord  one, so if you need help on anything ask in here or on Discord.  I am no expert on Thons but I am a Data Doctor and can fix most of the suggestions that Alex's program finds.  If I can't answer the issue someone will be able to, we have a lot of expertise on our team.

Congratulations to all on our Team (and the others too).  We got a lot done for Wikitree.  Also added to the US Black Heritage Project as all but about 6 profiles I did were African-American additions.

Wish I could have done more, but had my cat at the ER twice - 3 hours Friday evening and 3 hours Saturday afternoon.  $1010 later and still don't know what caused his episode of howling pain.  Needless to say, we were both quite stressed out all weekend.  He's better now, and finally ate a little this morning.

Oh man! So sorry you had to go through that. Thank you for the USBH additions I know we're over 100,000 profiles now. Just 50,000 more to go to our goal for the year!
Thanks, Emma.  I think he's back to normal now.
