How did anyone come to the conclusion that Ferdinando was born in Ashby de la Zouch ? William Sheppard married Anne Moore on 2nd November 1570 in North Aston, Oxfordshire 13 of their children are baptised there between 1572 (William) and 1597 (Ferdinando) i have not yet traced the baptisms for two daughter Sibell and Julyan but both marry in North Aston.

According to the Heraldic Visitations of Oxfordshire under the entry for Moore alias Meredith of North Aston William Moore al's meredyth of North Aston in the Countye of Oxford, gent, ... maryed Margarett daughter of Thomas Duncombe of Wingrave in the Countye of Buckingham, gentleman, and by her hath yssue Anne, his only daughter and heir appr as yet 1575. wch Anne is maryed to Willm. Sheppard of Northaston aforesaid sonne and heire to William Sheppard of Steple Barton in the Countye of Oxford.

I believe that William Sheppard of Steeple Barton is the same William son of William and Alice shown in the shown in the pedigree of Sheppard of Maulden in the H V of Bedfordshire 1634. So Ferdinando is Thomas of Hockley great nephew not his grandson.

I agree with your conclusion that William Sheppard of Steeple Barton was the son of William Sheppard of Littlecote died 1546. I have spent a lot of time working through wills and other records, and my hypothesis is:

William Sheppard of Littlecote d 1546 had 3 sons - William Sheppard of Steeple Barton, Thomas Sheppard of Hockliffe, and John Sheppard (who had 3 sons, but who I've not been able to trace further). Littlecote passed in due course to the William Sheppard of Littlecote who died in 1597, and then to the latter's son Baldwin. I believe this William was the son of a brother of William d 1546, probably called Thomas. Furthermore Baldwin stated in one deed that his father was William Sheppard, his grandfather was Thomas Sheppard, and his great-grandfather was William Sheppard. This would mean that the father of William d 1546 was another William Sheppard. This ties with the will of William Hoode of Crendon in 1489 which refers to William Sheppard the son of William Sheppard of Littlecote, aged under 22 at that time.

Thomas Sheppard of Hockliffe was the father of Thomas Sheppard of Maulden died 1607, and the latter's son, also Thomas Sheppard of Maulden, bought Littlecote (or rather, the part known as Chalfont manor) from Baldwin Sheppard.

William Sheppard of Steeple Barton left 2 young sons, John Sheppard who was in chambers at Grays Inn but also lived in North Aston, and William Sheppard who founded the branch at Great Rollright. I am currently trying to work out how these families were related to the Kendall, Methwold, and Swann families. Did Alice the widow of William of Steeple Barton remarry?

I would love to exchange more detailed info.

Hi,

I believe the connection with Kendall and Sheppard could be Busby.

William Sheppard of Steeple Barton married Elyn Busby and both are mentioned in Elyn's parents wills. Her father John Busby in his 1548 Steeple Barton will left his farm at Steeple Barton to his son-in-law William Sheppard. Agnes Busby in her 1557 Burmington will (she moved after her husband's death presumably following another daughter who had married Nicholas Tolly/Tooley of Burmington) mentions her daughter Ellyn or Allyn Sheppard. William Sheppard of Steeple Barton in his 1551 will asks Edmund Busby (Elyn Sheppard's brother) to look out for his young sons). Edmund then passes this duty on to others in his 1558 Hagbourne will.

John and Agnes had a daughter called Alice who was married to a Kendall.

I think John d 1548 was the heir of Richard Busby who left a will in 1539 at Great Tew. Richard mentions daughters called Pebworth [Barford St Michael] and Meese [either Rousham or Over Worton] (unusual names that John refers to aswell). I believe Richard is either a son or a grandson of William Busby d 1513 and his wife Agnes (maiden name unknown) who have a brass at Great Tew church. I am still working on these connections.

I think Richard Busby of Great Tew d 1539 had a brother called Robert d 1542 Chipping Norton and John d 1530 at Burford and also a William who I have yet to find (possibly he was of Enstone .

John who died in 1530 had a wife called Elizabeth (maiden name known) who went on to marry a Thomas Pymme (of Islington) who died 1549. In this John's will, his heir is his son Richard under 21. In Thomas Pymme's will 1549 will he ensures Richard inherits his father's property in Burford.

Tomas Pymme and his wife Elizabeth widow of John Busby of Burford appear quite alot in the chancery courts recovering money owned to John. Thomas may have steered this as he was a Baron of the exchequer for foreign recepts for Edward IV

In 1550 there is an inquisition regarding Richard Busby (Busby, Richard [idiot]: Middlesex C 142/91/55). He is regarded as being unable to manage his estate and his heir is named as Alice Sheppard wife of William Sheppard of Lydcot husbandman and that she was aged 30 years. If Alice was Richard's blood relative it could be that she was a Busby as well and may have been the daughter of John d 1530 Burford by his first wife Katherine, I am still working on this as I have to look at title deeds. Presumably his mother Elizabeth had died by then or remarried (I can find no record of this).

I hope this was useful. Best wishes Emma.
