The Federation Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) World Cup finals coming soon, so we're featuring David Beckham and other famous footballers in the Connection Finder this week.

Featured alongside him are:

Which one is most closely connected to you? If you're one of the 25.4 million of us who are connected to each other on our big tree you can check with the Connection Finder.

You can check for shared ancestors with the Relationship Finder. Are you a cousin to any of them? Your Relationship Finder Quick Links page (see your profile pull-down menu under "Relationships") has quick links for several notable groups.

Special feature: Check out how you're connected to other notables by using the green MyConnections button in the upper right hand corner of the category page. Browse related categories like Association Football Players, Australian Rules Football, and England International Football Players.

Let us know how you're related below! If you want to share your connection on social media with cousins and friends, click the "get shareable image" below the results, e.g. David Beckham and Mia Hamm. Then just upload it along with the URL of your direct connection. (Please refrain from sharing your connection on the featured profiles themselves, though. It clutters conversations on research and collaboration. Thanks!)

Help us with next week's feature: Secretaries of State. Help us choose and improve profiles for it.

No, the World Cup is not yet happening, but the draw of the groups for the World Cup will be on Friday.

Help:Connection_Finder says “ In order to provide instant results we build a special database once a day. It's rebuilt late at night.”. What does ‘late at night’ mean for the WikiTree community, which spans the globe? This should probably be rewritten to cite the actual Greenwich Mean Time (GMT)!

It is usually at 9am Slovenian time. No matter if there is DST or not.
That's about 7am GMT or, as we in the UK are now in BST, then it's 8am BST.

Of the football players featured - I'm most closely related to Alfred Lyttelton K.C. (1857-1913) at 16 degrees, who is my 7th cousins twice removed & Laurie Tetley also at 16 degrees.

Everyone else is between 23  to 34 degrees away.

Even closer is one not featured - an Australian rules, Collingwood player and President of CFC - Harry Curtis (1892-1968) - who is a second cousin once removed & 6 degrees from me.

Yes, but where is Harry Curtis on WikiTree?

Here Harry Richard Curtis it is.

Abby is limited by numbers so, some make the cut, and some don't.  Find a picture for Richard Curtis, and he stands more of a chance.
No worries, Ros. There must be thousands of great footballers. I wasn't expecting Harry Curtis to make the cut, just commenting on the fact that we had a notable footballer in our family.
I've linked his FindAGrave profile, which has one. Handsome chap.

This seems to be an extremely limited and subjective list of Soccer/Football players, either because few are in WikiTree, or because it is hard to find them. There are hundreds of more soccer players who could be included, if they have profiles in WikiTree and they could be found.

Even if they are in WikiTree already, identifying them would be difficult because there are few Categories to define them. I cannot even find a category for American Soccer players or Football players from any country other than England.

IMHO, a lot more work should be done to add the appropriate Categories and Athletes associated with this question. Someone could start with Mia Hamm who has not one category linked to her profile other than "Notables."

Beckham has no football related categories either.

@ Bill Vincent -- you are more than welcome to join in and nominate people for future themes for the Connection Finder.  Abby doesn't work in a vacuum - she relies heavily on names we, the people, suggest to her.  Such names must have a profile image (or one must be findable), and MUST be Connected to the main Tree (I can't tell you how many names I did not nominate because of the lack of Connection, and my perception of how difficult it most likely would be to Connect them in the time).  They should also have a decent biography, if possible (although we have featured the occasional profile with little to no biography).

You are also more than welcome to add "appropriate" categories to any profile.  If that is not possible due to Living status, then you can leave a comment for the Project managing the profile.

Also -- Categories don't just magically happen because you want them.  Someone needs to create them (and we're told there is a very small group of those doing this work), and often they first need to be requested.  Nobody is going to create a category on the off-chance it might be wanted some day.

I apologise in advance if I offend anyone, or appear as impolite.  My words are not intended to have that effect.

Melanie Paul, I have created categories in the past, but I have no idea how to create one for these athletes since they are known variously as Soccer players in the US and as Football players elsewhere. I have no idea where to start. I suspect the the existing categories used for Football players were not created correctly and should probably be moved under a more general category. One purpose for my post was to highlight the need for attention from the Categorization Project.

Considering the above, I do think that the topic of Soccer/Football players for the Connection Finder was a very ambitious choice. The upside is that it might encourage others to research and add more of these athletes to WikiTree. The World Cup takes place in Qatar later this year from 21 Nov 2022 to 18 Dec 2022. Perhaps the presence of those athletes on WikiTree can be improved before then.

Bill -- maybe we should take this discussion to the planning thread -- Connection Finder Planning 2022  -- as it seems pertinent to future suggestions more than one that has already been featured smiley

As to categories from countries other than England, there is:

4 x American Association Football (not applicable for this theme)
3 x Australian
3 x Canadian
