The proposed merge is in my list of proposals but I don't have any e-mail with that magic link to click on for approval ... grrrr.

See what happens when you click on MERGE (down on the proposal list).

In BrowseMatches, each pending merge has two lines on it to show whether it's been approved. For example, it will say something like "Approval from so-and-so for Smith-1000 has been recorded. Someone from Smith-2000's Trusted List needs to approve." The word "approve" is a link you can click on which is the same as the link in the email.

What is 'BrowseMatches'??  I'm in 'Pending Merges' and there is indeed an 'approve' link that I can click there but it just goes to the 'merge' help page ... not real useful.
Oh. I thought that approve link was actually to approve the merge. Sorry about that!

BrowseMatches is the same as Pending Merges. (In the URL, the page is called Special:BrowseMatches.)

You should be able to approve the merge by clicking on Compare, and then on Initiate a merge.
