Advice before editing this pre-1700 Felts profile?

I have information to contribute to the profile of Humphrey Felts. This is what I can add:

  • Father - Calleps Felts (Felps) - 1696 - 1794

These are the sources I am using:
  • It was sourced through my grandfathers research, but I do not have paid access to MyHeritage or Ancestry to obtain the source information. I am new to WT and would welcome any advice or assistance.

Should I contact one of the pre-1700 projects or know about any style guidelines before proceeding? Thank you!

Amber, it's great that you've asked for help with this.

If you check the projects page here you will see England and U.S. Souther Colonies both of which may have a "reliable sources" page for their project; that should give you some really good starting points.

Best of luck!

I looked in Ancestry, and there are a number of public family trees with Callep Felts. The source on most of them is another family tree or trees. Several are unsourced.

There are also several private families trees that are not accessible.

I did not look at MyHeritage since I do not have a paid subscription there.

I would focus on primary sources rather than family trees on websites.  freereg.org.uk has free English parish records as does familysearch.org plus obviously lots more (but please, do NOT use familysearch person profiles as a "primary source"; if they have sources then check if they are valid sources and feel free to use them).  NEHGR issues are free online if they are 100 years old or older and many town and county records are available at archive.org also for free along with more parish records and a gajillion genealogy books (some well-sourced, some not so buyer beware).  the UK national archives which contain English wills, land deeds, court records etc are free to get summaries of these documents and (I think) still allow free downloads of many of them.  And I'm just scratching the surface here.

Thank you all, I appreciate it! :)

Amber, pre-1700 profiles need a primary source.  Your father’s work may lead you to those sources.  FamilySearch, the LDS site, is free and has many digitized records.  Most public libraries provide free access to Ancestry and sometimes to other genealogy sites.  And since you’ve posted here to G2G, other Wikitreers may be able to help you locate those primary sources.
