Former largest unconnected branch is now connected

António Dias da Paz (1724 - 1786) was until today listed as the reference profile of the top largest unconnected branch, with over 6,700 profiles and counting.

This branch, extending mainly in Portugal, had a connexion profile in France Jean Jules Genelioux, and extending a bit his French relatives, I eventually stumbled on the Sivan family, which happens to have a great, large, well-sourced family tree, managed by Jean-Pierre Sivan (working only on Geneanet) in which I managed to find a bridge to known profiles.

Since the path is still a bit long, the branch is still a bit eccentric, and its furthest profiles are actually adding to the Outer Rim, with e.g., Herena Branco, at distance 65 from our reference Mary Stuart ...

[ edited May 6 : after the new connexion through the Pissarro branch, this distance has fallen to 55, below the "official" Outer Rim limits ... and to 45 the day after thanks to yet another connexion !!!]

Thanks for connecting António Dias da Paz.

A shorter French path to the main tree will be thought the impressionist painter Camille Pissarro (1830 - 1903). His great grandfather [[Gabriel-1663|Francisco José Gabriel (abt.1731-)]] was a New-Christian from Bragança, Portugal.

Another will be through Jacob Rodrigues Pereira (1715 - 1780), his parents were also New-Christians from Bragança. Was an academic and the first teacher of deaf-mutes in France. He was also the grand-father of the brothers Pereire.

Thanks for the head-up, Sn. I had seen you were working on the ancestors of Camille Pissaro, and at some point feared that you would make a connection before I did. smiley

Do you mean that at some point you will connect the branches of Camille Pissaro and Jacob Rodrigues Pereira to the Dias da Paz Bragança branch, without the détour en France? It would be great!

António Dias da Paz branch is now directly connected to Camille Pissarro, one of his 4th grand fathers from Bragança, Portugal was already in the branch since January, so it just needed the creation of 3 new profiles to connect to the main tree. :)

So now, through the Pissarros, António Dias da Paz is 35 degrees from Mary Stuart.

A connection through England will be to [[Mendes_Seixas-2|Rafael Mendes Seixas (1709-1780)]]

Excellent news, Sn! So I was right to fear (so to speak) you were upon something, and you deserve all the kudos, since this Pissarro connexion is much more "natural" (see what I mean) than the convoluted Tour de France through the Sivan family!

[edited] : side effect of this new connection, the whole branch has been pulled inwards, and e.g., Herena Branco whom I had featured in the Outer Rim page at distance 65 is now at 55. Will update ASAP ...

With the English connection through Rafael (Isaac)
Mendes Seixas*, now António Dias da Paz is 27 degrees from Mary Stuart.

* Rafael (Isaac) Mendes Seixas (1709 - 1780) is an ancestor of the US supreme court justice Benjamin Nathan Cardozo (1870 - 1938) and the poet Emma Lazarus (1849 - 1887)

Excellent! What next do you have in store? wink

Connected Francisco Henriques Nunes (1686-1742) (nickname "o Raba") to the French Rabas (Joseph Edmond Raba (1820-)).

Francisco Henriques Nunes family and ancestors were persecuted by the Inquisition. His widower and children moved from Bragança, Portugal to Bordeaux, France in 1763.

Yet another great connection!

Wow! That's awesome. Congratulations, Bernard! And thank you for leading the 100 Circles project and doing so much to enrich our understanding of connections. You're a WikiTree Star.

Thanks Chris. I'm just another explorer, eager to find new paths making the world smaller. And as a matter of fact, in this connection travel I stumbled upon a true explorer in real life, Casimir Maistre.

Fantastic, Bernard! Great job!
by Eric Weddington G2G6 Pilot (511k points)

Thx Eric.

BTW you might have noticed, as a regular Outer Rim Ranger, that while I was searching the very tip of the Portuguese branch (and did found the above quoted Herena Branco, among others), I also stumbled upon a Texan branch that I had missed before. Check David Henry Whitson at distance 64 of Mary Stuart. Should we enroll Texas Rangers in the Outer Rim?

Bernard, it appears that David's son William Robert Whitson (1928-1997) married a Leola Averett (1931-2009). Her paternal Averett and Roberts grandparents, and maternal great-grandfather Eaves, appear to be on Wikitree and just need sources to connect. These lines are all connected and will draw in the branch.

Thanks for the heads up Michelle!

Leola Averett's grandfather, Robert Charles Avertt, is 14 degrees from Mary Stewart (Queen of Scots)

David Henry Whitson is now connected through Robert Charles Avertt, per Michelle's findings above. That should bring the connection to 18 degrees from Mary Stewart, when everything updates.

Again, all credit to Michelle for finding this connection!

I've updated The Outer Rim page to match. Bernard, you may want to make adjustments.

Good job, folks! We need not call the Texas Rangers, then. laugh

Glad to be of assistance!
@Eric I will take the opportunity to refurbish completely the Outer Rim page, which has become with time too heavy. I already rewrote the introduction, and intend to cleanup a good deal of historical conversations, keeping those useful to understand the initial interrogations, and how we came to the current state of the project, methods used etc.

All that work and you only connected 6700 profiles???

Keep it up!
by Rick Morley G2G6 Pilot (159k points)

Sorry about that. But I wrote somewhere a conjecture that no unconnected branch should/could grow beyond 10k profiles. That one was driven towards making me wrong, could not stand it. cheeky

See : https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:Connection_Facts#No_large_branch_outside_the_Big_Tree

Nice link to your writeup- at 6700, you were well above the 99% chance of connection at 5000 profiles.

As I wrote, keep it up!

Ok, I was inspired by Bernard to try my hand at this

I just connected the third item in the Largest Unconnected Branches list. This is Jan Granda, with a branch size of over 3,000, who is now 5 degrees away from the rest of the tree (when it updates).

by Eric Weddington G2G6 Pilot (511k points)
My apologies to N. Gauthier, who put down that they were working on this branch! I just happened to get lucky and beat you to it.
I was inspired by Bernard's good work and have been working non stop on the Granda branch with over 3,000 files and I just linked it up!

And when I went to the largest unconnected branch at ...

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:Largest_Unconnected_Branches

Although I had noted that I was working on it ... someone else jumped on it :(

Ah, next time I won't create the American profiles until the very end !
In my defense, I started working on it before you had put your name in the table that said you were working on it. I updated the table 1 minute and 15 seconds after you did! I'm so sorry N.!

Well, let's say that was a fair coopetition ... smiley

In my defense, I started working on it before I updated the table that said I was working on it.

And you made your links through a profile "I" had created the day before!

Anyway, moving on to other connections :)
So... Teamwork, then!
Yes but the team will get more accomplished if we work on different items.

True, but we didn't know that we working on the same item. frown

My mistake was to create the American profile at the beginning when I had already found a pathway to connect that branch. And that is why I said ...

quote> "Ah, next time I won't create the American profiles until the very end !"

I thank you both. Connecting that branch was a great achievement. I've been watching that branch grow past Geok_Kim-1 over the past few months, and was hoping that somebody would connect it eventually.

(Now, if somebody could connect Geok_Kim-1, which has been the largest branch for most of the time since I started tracking branch sizes, that would make my day. No, week. No, month! Maybe year!)

Yes it would be nice to see that one get connected. Needs someone with knowledge of the Orient though.

Congratulations, Bernard for a connecting job well-done. You inspired me to look at a large unconnected tree and I hope I just connected a tiny tree in comparsion, 278 profiles for tree1408799.
by Lincoln Lowery G2G6 Mach 6 (66.5k points)
Thx Lincoln, and 278 is not that bad! I'm glad this post has inspired people to tackle other branches. Way to go!
Congratulations, Lincoln!
Thank you Bernard and Eric.

Excellent! Next one?
Fantastic, Tommy!
That's a great help Tommy. I have asked an experienced UK Connector to try and look at that one.
Looks like most of the female profiles will have to be adopted to change the Last Name At Birth.
I found some connection to Farber-75 too; just saw your post Tommy.
Excellent Lincoln.  #72 Farber-75 is now connected to the main tree!
Thank you Tommy. After I saw your post about Farber-75, I felt bad if I inadvertently stepped on your toes.
Nope, no stepping on my toes. It's wonderful to see this mysterious branch finally identified and connected.

There is a bigger list (but not by countries) of unconnected branches at ...

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Automated:DD_Unconnected_List_All

You can see a list of involved profiles by putting the branch title into the search tab at wikitree+ ...

https://wikitree.sdms.si/default.htm
by N Gauthier G2G6 Pilot (286k points)
on a totally different topic, Wikitree potential improvements, i wish if you clicked through to one of the trees on the Automated DD: unconnected tree listings, it would open on a new tab, so that the Automated DD: unconnected tree listings   remains on its own tab. (keep forgetting that at year end when they ask for suggestions).
"Right Click" > "Open in New Tab" works well (for old Windows addicts like me at least).
thanks
from this list I just connected Schimanski-8 with 426 profiles which should show connected with Sunday morning's update.

F.Y.I.

Earlier in the week (Wednesday), Ian added a "connections button" to the Largest Unconnected Branches page. You may have seen this new button appear. What this does is when you click the button, it will display in a table all the connected profiles so that you can sort them or peruse them at will.

I use this connection button, to bring up the list of connected profiles so that I can identify unique family names to further search on.

You will need to be using the WikiTree BEE extension to make use of this feature.

NOTE: The maximum unconnected branch size for the 'connections" button to appear is 711. So, the larger unconnected branches will not have this button associated with them. Also, it won't have a button, if the profile is already connected to the main tree.

The table includes the following columns (sortable in ascending or descending order) per profile:

  • Given name(s)
  • LNAB
  • CLN
  • Birth Date
  • Birth Place
  • Death Date
  • Death Place

Also, there is a "home" button next to each profile listed in the table so that you can bring up another popup table showing all the family members connected to that profile. The popup window can be moved around the screen.

Many thanks to Ian for implementing this!!!

Thx Tommy for the info. For less advanced users (like me) who are not using the WikiTree BEE extension (tried it once, but got more confused than anything else. I did not try very hard, though), the "My Connections" app listing the 10 first degrees or the 1000 first profiles, is useful.

Example : https://www.wikitree.com/index.php?title=Special%3AMyConnections&w=Jaroš-48
Bernard, I have been an Apple Safari user since its inception (20+ years).

BUT ... in December 2021, I installed Chrome for macOS so that I could try out the WikiTree BEE extension, and I am glad that I did. It took me about a week or two to learn my way around Chrome, but the enhanced features that the WikiTree BEE extension brings to the WikiTree experience has made it well worth it.  You just have to stick with it until it becomes second nature.

Looking at it once more, I remember why I gave up : too many features. I am terrible with interfaces, when there are too many menu items (read : more than ten five), I get confused and just don't see them. I was famous in my former software company to be able to miss new tabs in the interface for months ...

My brain is wired to read linear text. Beyond repair. wink

Yes! There are quite a few. It's like a buffet! Yet ... there is still room for more. laugh

I downloaded this app you mentioned.
If it makes a difference, I am using it on a computer and not a cell phone.

It is working for me as I can see his features and move some profile info to vertical listings on the right.

Can you please help me figure out how to see the connections ?

quote> Ian added a "connections button" to the Largest Unconnected Branches page.

I only see 3 buttons near the top for his program ...
- a plus sign for watchlist
- a tree image for ancestors
- a dress image for style

But nothing happens when I click on any of those 3 buttons :(

quote> Also, there is a "home" button next to each profile listed in the table so that you can bring up another popup table showing all the family members connected to that profile.

I do not see any "home" button or any buttons at all next to the table listings which name the unconnected branches :(

Am I doing something wrong, or should I abandon the app as it does not work for my system. Thanks

The "connections button" is coming in a future update.

The "connections button" was added to the development/testing version and still needed some fine tuning.

However, you should be able to see it on the largest unconnected Notables page:

You should see these buttons now.
