Cremation Sites and Memorials

Hi All,

Wondering if we need to add Cremation/Funeral homes into Wikitree as a cemetery/memorial site.  I ask as I notice that Find a Grave is now moving in that direction for memorials.  See June (Gawthorne) Wade (1929-2021), https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Gawthorne-101 for one of these FaG Memorials.

In this case we would add Macquarie Valley Chapel, Mudgee, New South Wales

That looks like an optional user addon to the Cremation option, not an official cemetery. It's not a new option.

I'm not sure that adding funeral homes is a good option. However, putting myself in the future, I can see how it would be very beneficial to have a way to indicate that a person has no burial. Perhaps some sort of category or other way to mark a person as cremated without burial?

I see that there has been discussion on those already and a category "with loved ones" a subcategory under cremation.

However the point is also made that categories are for grouping to help find others and that's not really what we are trying to do here and that could lead to all kinds of subcategories as people do all kinds of things with ashes.

I still think we need a way to mark a profile simply as not buried. After looking at all our options in creating a profile, I think the best option would be an addition to the initial information. A box for burial place (which would be great anyway) could them also have an option to select cremated/no burial underneath like we choose options for birth and death (before or after this date etc). This wouldn't eliminate the need for cemetery categorization as we still want to be able to group to find additional family etc.

There are already categories for those who were cremated —
[[Category:Cremated, Disposition Unknown]]
[[Category:Cremated, Ashes With Loved Ones]]
[[Category:Cremated, Ashes Scattered]]
[[Category:Cremated, Space Burial]]

This is a GREAT question.  I was wondering about something probably the same, or very similar.

My grandfather was cremated, and I believe he's not in a traditional plot, but in a "Columbarium."  Which a quick google search says a "columbarium" is "a room or building with niches for funeral urns to be stored."

So, how would we handle these types of "burials" in relation to the "Cemetery Project?"

ok, so based off of Melanie Paul's category answer, it looks like if someone is cremated and buried somewhere, like a "columbarium," then they'd just get categorized under the "cemetery" location.

Now, my question would be, IF the columbarium is at the church, rather than at a cemetery, would we create a category for the church columbarium?
I think the columbarium would be separate from the church and treated like a cemetery. Church (Congregation) Categories are intended for categorizing members. The two types can be cross linked through their Category Information Boxes.
I'll have to visit the church next time i'm in town an able too.  When I google map it, the pin for the Columbarium is pinned on the church itself.  So, I'm not 100% sure if it resides within the larger building, or "nearby."

You've peaked my interest in looking into "congregation" categories though.  I will certainly be looking into this as another category to tag.

Yes, You can create a church columbarium.  This fits the current guidelines.  Do not forget to link the memorial site and the congregation together.

The profiles that do not fit the guidelines are when the the person is cremated and the then the family takes and disposes privately.  That is, no memorial place.  My question is more if we know the place of cremation, should that be included as a category.  We could then add the place of cremation and then one of the cremated categories mentioned previously and repeated here:

[[Category:Cremated, Disposition Unknown]]
[[Category:Cremated, Ashes With Loved Ones]]
[[Category:Cremated, Ashes Scattered]]
[[Category:Cremated, Space Burial]]

And can we have a fifth category:

[[Category: Cremated, Private Memorial]]

Craig

My husband fits two categories --

[[Category:Cremated, Ashes With Loved Ones]]
[[Category:Cremated, Ashes Scattered]]
