Trying to find a FamilySearch Census record to match Ancestry record

Any FamilySearch experts out there?  I'm trying to use "free" sources to document WikiTree.  I've found the needed 1900 US Census record on Ancestry, but can't find the same record on FamilySearch.  Can you help?  Please document your steps so I can repeat them in the future.

Here's the Ancestry record:

https://www.ancestry.com/discoveryui-content/view/35152195:7602?ssrc=pt&tid=77118259&pid=48356247216

The actual name is Charles Edward McCool.  His wife is Angeline and their daughter is Permilla.  The Census record is all but illegible, so who knows how FamilySearch has indexed it.  His real birthdate is 11 Nov 1869 in MO (supported by three other Census records) - but the 1900 Census appears to say Nov 1861.

Install the WikiTree Sourcer (WTS) browser extension. https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:WikiTree_Sourcer

From the record, click on the [1] for the Sourcer then pick Search Family Search and select Search the same collection for the same record.

I love this extension especially for use on Ancestry! Took me a while to convert to using it and now I am SOLD!
Absolutely!  Notice that to answer Kevin, it takes 3 mouse clicks. Not too shabby. I use this a lot when I find an Ancestry source but would rather use a FamilySearch source.

Since you have the reference, you can also click the "browse all ... images" button on the 1900 census page, and just follow it through (Arkansas, Benton, ed 13, and then find the page, which is image 26 since it's sheet 13b)

That will take you here

Here's the link to the FamilySearch image:

"United States Census, 1900", database with images, FamilySearch (https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:M3XN-TX5 : 9 March 2022), Ch* E McCoal, 1900.

I started by looking at the Ancestry result.

I then went to FamilySearch with the following parameters in the search criteria

  • Census
  • Residence date:  1900
  • Location: United States, Arkansas
  • Name: McCoal, note that my browser, Safari, wanted to change this to McCool, so I changed it back

The first result was for Ch* E McCoal, with this result:

Name Ch* E McCoal
Sex Male
Age 39
Event Date 1900
Event Place Sugar Creek Township, Benton, Arkansas, United States
Event Place (Original) Sugar Creek & Mt. Vernon Townships, ED 13, Benton, Arkansas, United States
Birth Date Nov 1861
Birthplace Missouri
Marital Status Married
Race White
Years Married 11
Relationship to Head of Household Head
Father's Birthplace Missouri
Mother's Birthplace Missouri
Event Type Census
Household Identifier 246
Line Number 79
Sheet Letter B
Sheet Number 13
Sheet Number and Letter 13B
Affiliate Publication Number T623
Affiliate Name The U.S. National Archives and Records Administration (NARA)

and the FS generated citation is:

"United States Census, 1900", database with images, FamilySearch (https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:M3XN-TX5 : 9 March 2022), Ch* E McCoal, 1900.

I think the key is having the exact spelling. With the “corrected” spelling of McCool it did not find the result.

I also tried something else … I took the state off the search criteria, it still found the result, but it was a bit down the list.

I answered a similar question a couple of years ago at https://www.wikitree.com/g2g/674458/this-is-why-i-only-want-to-use-ancestry?show=674579#a674579.  I don't think much has changed.  This is primarily for those situations when a FamilySearch search just won't find the right record.
