Given the stories in the USA this week, I thought it would be interesting to see the connection between these two Canadian notables - proud to be related by several lines to each of them.

We know how Atwood themes have sprung up due to the recent Supreme Court ruling - but she is the second cousin twice removed of our greatest Supreme Court Justice ever, Ivan Cleveland Rand[[https://www.scc-csc.ca/judges-juges/bio-eng.aspx?id=ivan-cleveland-rand]].

Although, he had some personally reprehensible attitudes, there was something completely unprecedented about his style upon donning the robes that took over

At the core was the "rule of law" which meant the the work of delegated administrators could not be negatively overridden by political influence, nor was anyone above the law.

As he is described in wiki [[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ivan_Rand]]

He was a civil libertarian who struck down restrictive covenants that barred property from being sold or rented to Jews or non-whites, acknowledged the rights of Japanese Canadians who were being interned as enemy aliens during World War II, defended the rights to free speech of the Communist Party of Canada when it was banned by the Canadian government under the War Measures Act as well as the rights of Jehovah's Witnesses being persecuted under Quebec's Padlock Law

For those involved in the notable project perhaps a place to ratchet up those unknown confidences - I will look at them too.

Ivan Cleveland Rand CC (1884-1969) and Margaret Atwood are both descendants of Silas Rand (abt.1778-1842).

1. Ivan is the son of Nelson Lawrence Rand (1842-1910) [unknown confidence]
2. Nelson is the son of Silas Asa Rand (1803-1862) [unknown confidence]
3. Silas is the son of Silas Rand (abt.1778-1842) [unknown confidence]
This makes Silas the great grandfather of Ivan.

1. Margaret is the daughter of Margaret Dorothy (Killam) Atwood (1909-2006) [unknown confidence]
2. Margaret is the daughter of Harold Edwin Killam (1878-1957) [unknown confidence]
3. Harold is the son of William Henry Killam (1833-1905) [unknown confidence]
4. William is the son of Amy (Rand) Killam (1805-aft.1842) [unknown confidence]
5. Amy is the daughter of Silas Rand (abt.1778-1842) [unknown confidence]
This makes Silas the third great grandfather of Margaret.

A 7th cousin 3x removed and brings up another colonial family where additional research is needed to evaluate the confidence in what WT presents: Eddy family (surrounding this fellow https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Eddy-1675).

Interesting family.  It is the only one that my wife, mom and dad have in common anywhere going back to the original Vicar Eddye.

My wife's family changed the spelling from Eddy to Edey upon moving from Vermont to Lower Canada (now Quebec) to Edey, which during our own stay in Aylmer (fusion Gatineau) for a couple of decades, her name reverted to it under QC civil code.

It coincided with us living a couple of blocks away from the family graveyard for Canada, which I first discovered while powering down a twisty hill on my bike and seeing flashes of stones with Edey on them and doing the scooby doo head twist (almost becoming a candidate to join them lol).

A very prolific member of the family is Moses Chamberlain Edey
