Hear Ye, Hear Ye

If you are interested in people who are famous, notable, noted, significant, important, historic, heroic, or otherwise fascinating, then the Notables Project might be for you!

The idea behind this post is for anyone who needs help with connecting Notables to the tree to post to this thread and ask for help, or if you want to tell us whom you have successfully connected up, or if you want to join the Notables Project and get a badge.

Besides checking out the Notables Project page, don't forget to take a look at the Notables List page, where you can find lists of Notables who have profiles which aren't yet connected to the main tree. (For ideas on way to connect unconnected people and branches, see the Hints and Tips on the Connectors Chat page.)

Please remember to concentrate on those Notables who have already passed (died), so that we can see their profiles. If you create a profile for a living Notable, that profile WILL GO UNLISTED and no one can see it except for the PM and anyone on the trusted list!

And remember - Notables should have a Wikipedia page at the very least to qualify. But an entry in the country's NATIONAL Whose Who or a NATIONAL Biography  is acceptable as well. And they preferably should be DEAD!

Notable little person actor John William "Jack" Purvis should show as Connected by tomorrow.  (Through his wife, because I just couldn't find sources for his own family -- maybe someone else will have better luck.)

I am working on a notable profile of Ray Stanley Sugden AKA "Tampa, England's Court Magician". He does not have a Wikipedia page, but he has two books written about him, I hope that is acceptable. I have him connected to the world tree as he is the grandfather of my uncle. Sugden-349
by Lukas Murphy G2G6 Mach 6 (60.3k points)
Hi Lukas - in order to qualify them for the project outside of having a Wikipedia page, we have to perform the same process as Wikipedia would do related to obtaining them a Wikipedia page. They must be proven to have done something "notable" - i.e., something famous, unique, historical, etc. that is proven and supportable through a significant number of sources that can be validated. The biography for these individuals must be fairly significant, as it is the only central source that we can rely upon to reflect their specific accomplishments, demonstrate the sources utilized, and prove that they have the requirements for being acknowledged as "Notable". Most profiles have people who have done something "notable" in their lifetime, but not everyone would qualify as "Notable" or qualify for a Wikipedia page, so we do have to screen these carefully. Independent and unique sources are key as we cannot simply acknowledge that these individuals are Notable based on our own opinion, but that they qualify based on multiple sources that acknowledge what they are notable for.

Hope that helps.

Butch Trucks, drummer and founding member of the Allman Brothers, is now connected.

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Trucks-47

Virgil "Fire" Trucks, MLB pitcher, is also connected. Wikipedia says Virgil was Butch's uncle, but they are in fact, third cousins once removed.

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Trucks-42

Anybody who follows music knows that the Trucks family has yielded a number of talented musicians.
by Mark Burch G2G6 Pilot (218k points)
According to Serbian terminology, Virgil would be Butch's uncle. In Serbian there is no word for cousin, they are siblings (of aunt/uncle, to distinguish them of "born siblings", which are siblings in the English terminology). But that means that everybody in the younger generation is niece/nephew, 2R is grand... 3R is great... etc.
They are from Alabama, pretty sure they are not Serbian.
I'm pretty sure I know that. I only wanted to show that the English speaking "removed" concept is not a universal one.
Considering how stepchildren/stepparents were once termed as "in law" (literally in Law), and cousins were regarded as nieces/nephews, I don't think the term "removed" was in use back a few generations or so.  Those we now see as cousins-x-removed were simply "niece" or "nephew", although a generational qualifier might be used to show it wasn't a direct aunt/uncle-->niece/nephew relationship.
We need to be careful with terminology, because what it is now, it wasn't so in the past - and what it is now won't be what it will be in the future.
Also, as Jelena notes - different cultural backgrounds will use different terms.  My family connections use "aunt" and "uncle" to denote all relatives of the generations above their own, even those not related.
Growing up in Australia, with only English influences on my Australian-ness, I had "honorary" aunts and uncles.  It was a term of respect.  (My kids also had a few.)
Just wanted to note that he's (Butch) my 17th cousin :)

Please add PPP and set the appropriate privacy level for the following who are now connected:

1. Tennis legend - Jimmy Connors - https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Connors-1731  (Repeated here in case the May post is no longer checked.)

2. Basketball coach - Lefty Driesell  - https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Driesell-1

As part of the Kevin Bacon challenge, I added this one: https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Osborne-10562 (Thomas Mott Osborne)

His son https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Osborne-10560 (Lithgow Osborne) also has a Wikipedia page and might be considered a notable.

I'm not sure what all you normally do with your profiles...I've only worked with USBH notables that I think have a slightly different procedure/standards. So someone from your project may want to take a look at them.
by Christy Melick G2G6 Pilot (106k points)
Both profiles look great, Christy! Thanks.

Please add PPP and set the yellow privacy level for the following who are now connected (they should show the next database update):

1. Actor (Gunsmoke ) and Cowboy Hall of Fame member - Buck Taylor - https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Taylor-88566

2. Actress (Lassie, Lost in Space) and NASA awardee - June Lockhart - https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Lockhart-5883

by Russell Butler G2G6 Pilot (137k points)

About a year ago, I set out to improve the profile of Broadway producer George Lederer, after reading about his five fascinating marriages in a magazine article. Wife #1, was vaudeville actress Clara Binns (aka Daisy Linton), who left him for comedian Jacob Havel (aka Thomas O'Brian). Jacob and Clara had a son, Arthur Havel, who also became a vaudeville performer. Arthur married vaudeville actress Helen Lockhart who was the sister of actor Gene Lockhart, father of actress June Lockhart. Quite a list of notables for one family tree! In fact, it was my "Lederer mini-project" that ultimately got me hooked on the Notables Project.

George Leader's fourth wife, by the way, was actress Rene Davies, sister of actress Marian Davies, who in turn, had a rather scadalous marriage to newspaper magnate William Randolph Hearst.

Privacy has been set on these 2 profiles to yellow.
Thank you!

I was finally able to connect the Robinson family of Hawaii, who still own the island of Ni'ihau. They came from Scotland to Hawaii by way of New Zealand and have a fascinating history.

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Robinson-35262

One of the members of the extended Robinson/Sinclair/McHutcheson family was Isabella Sinclair, a botanist and illustrator who produced one of the first books about the indigenous flowers of Hawaii.

Very nice, Mark! Hawaii is another location where I believe we have a few key connections, but not a lot, so all inroads there that we can create can only strenghthen future connections. Thanks!

Two profiles regarding recording artists who sang as part of a duo.

1.  Jim Seals of Seals and Croft.  He recently passed away - https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Seals-620

2. Dean Torrence of Jan and Dean. He is living - https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Torrence-520 (I connected Dean to the main tree. )

For both duos, there are Wikipedia pages in multiple languages.  However, the Wikipedia pages reflect both members of the duo.

What happens in this case? - it seems that both member of the respective duos are notable.

If you agree that they're notable, please add PPP and yellow privacy on Dean's profile.

Don't over think it, Russell. They were good as a duo but musicians on their own. Good to go, my friend. Good to go!
We are just waiting on Scott to get used to his fancy new computer so he can open things up on these two profiles.
Yes indeed.  Even without an individual Wikipedia page, I agree that they would be notable.
Jan (William Jan Berry) is on WT and connected:

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Berry-17172
Generally, those that were key members of a group that's discussed on Wikipedia and mentioned directly in the article in a key manner would qualify. It gets more questionable when you talk about "John Smith" who played with the band during one of their tours for a brief period and never made any impact, other than he was fortunate enough to play with them. Then we would have to question whether or not "John" would be a part of things. I think the thing you have to question then is whether or not the band would have been who they are without John - in this type of example, I would say they would - so "John" wouldn't qualify simply for his brief tour with the band. He'd have to qualify some other way.

But Seals of Seals & Croft is a critical person in that duo, and Dean of Jan & Dean is the same. They're easy to figure out at least. I'm working on their privacy and will have it done shortly.
Whoops - just the one. The others, having passed, are open.
And unfortunately, while my computer is up and running at 100%, my body caught some bug and now I'm the one struggling. I think I'm in recovery mode, but just gave this bug to my wife and now she's got it. Oh well - I really do wish sometimes I was 20 again so that I could shrug these things off more quickly, but I guess it will go away soon enough.
I send a request to Wikipedia so hopefully, Dean will have an individual Wikipedia profile sometime in the future.

During the call for science fiction writers I created

1) Terrance William Dicks -  https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Dicks-942

2) Phyllis Eisenstein - https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Kleinstein-2

Both profiles need to be connected to the global WikiTree.
by Judi Stutz G2G6 Pilot (329k points)
Didn't realize that Terrance Dicks had passed so recently. Not sure I've heard of Phyllis, so I'll have to see if I've seen anything she's written. Thanks for these Judi.
I have seen Sorcerer's Son (by Eisenstein) before, but I don't think I've read it yet. I like series books, so it might creep onto my reading list.

Not really expecting to get the family Connected before Monday, but in hopes of inclusion in a future event I have created a profile for Science Fiction author Todd McCaffrey.  He qualifies to have an open profile as a Living Notable, and the Project is already co-Manager.  Please to be opening the profile.

by Melanie Paul G2G6 Pilot (422k points)

Connection should show by tomorrow.

As it goes through Todd's paternal line it could be bettered (and shortened?) if another link can be found - or one through his mother's lineage (noted author Anne McCaffrey).

His profile is now set to Yellow privacy. Thanks!
Thanks, Scott.

I also added a profile Sam Youd / John Christopher a Science Fiction writer, not had much chance to look at it yet due to competing in the Kevin Bacon challenge on that challenge I added Timothy Ruth Near I couldn't find a Wikipedia Page but most people would recognise her from Sesame Street Muppet Wiki. She is the Sister of Holly Near  who does have a Wikipedia Page. .

by Heather Jenkinson G2G6 Pilot (126k points)
Oh YES - I remember the Tripods trilogy. That was one of my favorite stories growing up. I read it when I was fairly young, and it had an impression on me - I even wanted to write like him for awhile. I read it years later as an adult, and while it was written for a younger audience, it still brought back familiar memories.

After reading Timothy Near's bio, it surprises me that she doesn't have a Wikipedia page, but there does appear to be enough evidence for one, although there are some fairly large holes in her bio that I suspect would get filled in if someone sat down and did the research.

The same happened to me when I read The Guardians I made a mental note of the author (I'd borrowed the book off a friend) I Bought the book later, along with a few others enjoyed all I've read. Didnt realise he was Lancashire born until I created his profile on here! I have created a profile for Timothy but shes hidden sad due to her still being alive. I have placed Notables Project Wikitree as the manager of the profile, I am not able to make her profile public.

He's not public, but I connected one of my rock stars! Zack de la Rocha of Rage Against the Machine is now connected to the Tree.
by Jessica Key G2G6 Pilot (314k points)

Zack has enough versions of Wikipedia-pages to be opened up to yellow.

Doctor Who actor, and Blue Peter presenter, Peter Purves qualifies as a Living Notable.
I've added his parents and am working on linking him up to our MRCA so he'll be Connected once I get those profiles done.
The Project is already co-manager, so can I please have him PPP set and opened as a Living Notable.  Thanks!

by Melanie Paul G2G6 Pilot (422k points)
Updated his privacy to Yellow privacy.
Again, thanks, Scott.
