Creel Family

This is the only information I have regarding the Creels. I would like to go back past Anthony but cannot find any more information.

The information posted at GenForum was posted by my mother who lost everything she had in paperwork, family bibles, records etc in a house fire about 8 years ago. I have chosen to pick up where she left off however this is the only information I can find and the only information she can remember to give me.

Anyone related to this line of Creels who has any information is greatly appreciated. Anyone who has any other sources for where I can look for information is also appreciated. I am still so new to this and still am very "dumb" to sources for information, how to find information etc.

Dear Jessica - First of all I want to say how sorry I am that your family records were lost in a fire.

I am not related to the CREEL family, but I thought I would try to find out some information for you.

Do you know about the website,  Someone has posted the memorials for ANTHONY (Memorial #10159815) and NANCY McLEMORE CREEL (Memorial #1805198), buried in the Dixie Cemetery in Loco, Stephens Co., Oklahoma.  If you will go to the website and type in the Memorial Number, it will take you to the memorials.  There is quite a bit of information on ANTHONY's memorial that you will find very interesting.  Did you know that your ANTHONY served in the Civil War?

CREEL FAMILY researchers state that ANTHONY's father was RICHARD CREEL (born about 1783 in North Carolina, died before 1850), his mother was SARAH TONEY CREEL (born about 1793 in South Carolina, died after 1860).

From the research of land records, census records, etc., there is a good possibility that this information is accurate.

It is interesting that RICHARD & SARAH  CREEL named one of their sons, TONEY CREEL - could this be evidence that her maiden name was, in fact, TONEY?

ANTHONY & NANCY CREEL named their first son, RICHARD CREEL.  It was common practice back then to name the first son after the father's father.

I focused on the Scott Co., Mississippi records, as I think I found your ANTHONY CREEL living with his mother on the 1850 Scott Co., MS Census.  Transcribed below:

Head of household, SARAH CREEL, age 57, born in South Carolina, occupation is "none".

Son, ANTHONY CREEL, age 16, born in MS, he is a "laborer".

Son, SAMUEL CREEL, age 13, born in MS.

From this Census, we know that ANTHONY's father was no longer the "head of the household" - which probably means he has died. (before June 1850).

I went back in time to the 1845 Scott Co., MS Census and found a RICHARD CREEL as head of household.

Listed in the 1841 Scott Co., MS Census is RICHARD CREEL as head of household - there are 7 males and 5 females in this household.

Listed in the 1840 Scott Co., MS Census is RICHARD CREEL as head of household.

A person named LORENA KERDELL has information on your CREEL family posted on  Does that name sound familiar?

There is a free searchable website, that is an excellent source!  Check it out and type in your CREEL family names!

You can try - it's free and it's a great site, too.  You may "hook up" with cousins that you didn't know you had!  That's what happened to me!  I found "cousins" in Oklahoma that I didn't know about and they were kind enough to send me a "tintype" of my great grandmother - who was a sister to their great grandmother.

I hope this information helps you - Sincerely, Melinda
