Are there groups related to Scotts-Irish immigrants to colonial America?

Several family lines in central North Carolina that family tradition indicates are from counties in Northern Ireland in the mid to late 1700s. I am trying to find where they came from and, if possible, why they immigrated.

Ancestry.com offers great info on this subject and worth a read.

Most of the immigrants hailed from Ulster in Northern Ireland and were Scottish transplants or of Scottish descent.
