How to categorise locations in the North Riding of Yorkshire?

Hi I am currently working on a set of profiles where the people are from Ainderby Quernhow (this profile is an example http://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Raper-305) I haven't added the category to their profiles yet as I want to check a couple of things.

  • Should we use the modern spelling of these places for categories?
  • How should it be categorized?

For this example would it be Ainderby Quernhow>Pickhill with Roxby>North Riding of Yorkshire, Yorkshire>England

or Ainderby Quernhow>North Riding of Yorkshire, Yorkshire>England

(Pickhill with Roxby was the parish Ainderby and several other towns where in, is their a benefit to organizing by parish especially in the rural areas which aren't in a big city)

  • For all of the Yorkshire categories should we add places in as the town or first the city and then town.

The theory is that only the lowest-level category should need to be on the profile.  The hierarchy is somebody else's problem.

The problem you may be left with in some cases is choosing an unambiguous unique name for the low-level category, given that so many places had the same names.

Certainly we don't want England on every English profile - the technical people have said that a category shouldn't have more than a few thousand immediate members.  (See thread about Descendants of Charlemagne)
Thanks, I'll put them in Ainderby Quernhow

For this example would it be Ainderby Quernhow>Pickhill with Roxby>North Riding of Yorkshire, Yorkshire>England

Well if I were recording that location at any time I would not repeat Yorkshire, no matter where I was recording things, so if I wanted a full address, from the past I would probably use

Ainderby Quernhow, Pickhill with Roxby, North Riding of Yorkshire, England

If I were recording a current event, then I would use

Ainderby Quernhow, Thirsk, YO7 nxx, depending on how accurate I wanted to be.

As for not having England on every profile, what about Newcastle or Washington, for example? I know of a number of each in a number of different countries.

For the locations on the the actual profile I have used Ainderby Quernhow, Pickhill with Roxby, North Riding of Yorkshire, England. I'm glad you mentioned you would do the same.

For the category/template I just added put him in Ainderby Quernhow>North Riding of Yorkshire, Yorkshire>England>...

These profiles are from the 1600s

The UK project have set up the categories to use the ... Riding of Yorkshire, Yorkshire, and I think the by England on every profile they meant not putting every English person in the category England but to put them in the sub categories of England.
