Can anyone give me a detailed explanation for how to add my sources?

I have been adding my family's profiles to my WikiTree, but I have not been able to enter my sources yet. This is because I am not entering the <ref> etc., properly. I have read and re-read the instructions on how to do this, but I must be doing it wrong. I would like to add newspaper clippings, telephone directory listings, and census records.

Can someone offer more detailed intructions on how to do this?

Thank you, in advance, for your time.

Start with <ref>Enter in words the information in your source. Author, Title, Publication info or whatever. End the information with </ref>

At the end of the page add

== Sources ==

<references />

The <references /> is most important if you actually want to see them.

To the right of the bio edit box are mini directions for doing this. You can copy paste ==Sources == <references /> from there. You can also click on the links to get more detailed directions.

Here's a sample of how to use them. Just click the edit tab to take a look

I also did one for Dionicio. http://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Ramirez-922 It's pretty basic, but it will show you how.

Hi Danielle,

Anne's answer and examples are perfect.  Another place you might look is the Holocaust Profile Template at:  http://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:HolocaustProfileTemplate

You will see 2 views of a sample profile there - what the editing page looks like and what the profile view looks like.  You can copy and paste from the editing page sample to use parts of it in a profile you are working on - that may make it easier.

Greetings Danielle,

Congratulations on your great start, and welcome to the G2G community. The strength of the WikiTree depends upon the contributions of collaborative volunteers and the integrity of their supporting documentation. Thank you for your eagerness to to help us in our endeavor.

Personally, I make frequent use of the help files and the Q&A on G2G, ---but very often find understanding it all more than a tad difficult. To make sense of it all, I then go to an open profile that exhibits the type of content I'm trying to emulate, and click on the profile's edit tab so I can view how the contributor(s) succeeded in displaying their narrative style and documentation. Sometimes I cut and paste their work into a word-processor document so I can rework the content to suit my needs, and then paste the rewrite into one of my created profiles.

We all look forward to seeing you here on G2G and viewing the results your labor.
