I went through DNA screening for mitochondrial DNA and for Y chromosome with the National Genographic Project.  Can I use that data here?

Hello Bob,

It sounds like you have Genographic 1.0 results which provided 12 marker results for your Y chromosome and HVR1 results for your mtDNA. In that case your results can be used in WikiTree.

It would be best if you transferred your results (for free) from the Genographic Project to Family Tree DNA (FTDNA).  Phone or "E-mail" Family Tree DNA at https://www.familytreedna.com/contact.aspx and ask them how to do it (then report back and let us know! ;-)

If you are able to transfer from Genographic 1.0 to FTDNA then from your  Y-DNA Matches page then you can click on the Upload to YSearch button and from your mtDNA matches page you can click on the Upload to MitoSearch button.

If for some reason FTDNA is no longer accepting 1.0 transfers then you can still add (manually enter) your 12 marker results to YSearch and your HVR1 results to MitoSearch.  One of the Genographic markers (DYS389) needs to be converted when entering into YSearch.  Add together the two DYS389 values from the Genographic Project to get the DYS389-2 value which you should enter at YSearch.  For an explaination about it see http://eng.molgen.org/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=567

When I first enter a result in YSearch or MitoSearch I enter (temporarily) a rare haplogroup like P for Y-DNA and Z for mtDNA.  That way, if I get an error message when I save, I can still retrieve my ID by searching for that haplogroup.  Once I know my ID, I change my haplogroup from P (or Z) to my actual haplogroup.

Sincerely, Peter

Peter,

I've done both the 1.0 and the 2.0.  I guess I should send both. Right?

Bob
Hello Bob,

Geno 2.0 is mostly an autosomal test which is incompatable with other autosomal tests (namely Family Finder, 23andMe, and AncestryDNA).  Thus it can't be uploaded to GEDmatch for comparisons and so it is not useful for genealogy or to WikiTree.

However Geno 2.0 does provide more precise Y and mtDNA haplogroup predictions than Geno 1.0.  So I recommend using those (Geno 2.0) haplogroups in the haplogroup fields on your DNA Tests page (for your Geno 1.0 results). Then you can explain it in the note field (e.g. mtDNA haplogroup estimated to be H2a3 by Genographic 2.0 test).
