It means you may have something like this:

John was born in 1900 in Blackburn, England.<ref>Citation goes here</ref><ref> His parents were John and Mary... 

Or maybe...

John was born in 1900 in Blackburn, England.<ref>Citation 1</ref>Citation 2</ref> His parents were John and Mary...
