myheritage GEDCOM import

A couple of years ago, I started building my tree in geni.com, and migrated it over to WikiTree (about 400 people I think).  Last year, I got a good deal on MyHeritage and have put a lot of effort into the tree since then.  However, I don't want to renew with them and so I'm thinking about moving the improved tree to wikiTree, especially so I can invite family and friends in the tree without requiring them to subscribe to a website.

I have already downloaded the GEDCOM of 2900 individuals.  If I were to import the GEDCOM, will I need to manually merge 500+ records; and are there any ways to reduce the pain of migration?

Charles,

As you have already uploaded a GEDCOM and know that you have matches, you will have to skip those when you upload the new GEDCOM.  You will not be able to upload the entire GEDCOM, including duplicates, and then merge them later.  You may be able to ignore a few matches, but VERY few.

And I am not sure you will be happy with the results if you upload your MyHeritage GEDCOM, skipping the dups.  If your figure of 500 is correct, you would have to skip all of those (WHAT A PAIN GOING THROUGH THAT LIST), as well as any others that have matches on WikiTree, and then finding and reattaching them once you upload the ones that are left.

Unless you have added lots of well-sourced info to your MyHeritage tree, it would probably be easier just to add each one individually to your tree.  My opinion.

I agree, It is easier to just do it manually.

I agree with "anonymous." This doesn't need to be a crisis.

You don't need to use the MyHeritage website. Keep your data on your own computer and manage it with the free MyHeritage Family Tree Builder software.

You can create Gedcom files of any size from Family Tree Builder. And you can add content here when it suits your schedule.
