Yes, the town of Round Rock, Texas has an association called the Old Settlers Association. My grandfather, Franklin Lincoln Aten was one of the presidents of the association for years and when they established the Old Settlers Park outside of Round Rock they named one of the streets in the park "Aten"
Yes,,,, My Great Grandfather Millard McNutt ,,, Mc Nutt-948 He was a lay Methodist Minister in Alabama and one of the 32 founding members of Liberty M.E. Church, South 1877 according to the Church Record. The Church was renamed in his honor about 1930 to 1940. The McNutt Memorial Methodist Church, Dekalb Alabama.
The town of Louisiana, Missouri, is named after my GGG grandfathers sister, Louisiana (Basye) Tombs.  Their father was John Walter Basye, the towns founder.
My mum told me I was named after Dawn Frazer and Lorraine Crapp,( swimmers).

Dawn Fraser (note spelling) and Lorraine Crapp both swam for Australia in the 1956 Olympic Games, Melbourne, Australia. I heard their race on the radio (Australia did not have TV until that year and most people could not afford one). Dawn was the first woman to break 60 seconds for 100 metres freestyle (she held the world record for this event for 15 years) and also represented her country in the Rome and Tokyo Olympics. The Balmain swimming pool in Sydney Harbour was renamed after her.smiley

Thankyou for your email and thanks for correcting my spelling.

It looks like someone's driveway, but one day I noticed a street sign for "Learned Lane." Had there once been a school where people "learned" ? Then I "learned" that it had been named for the prominent Learned family, who also spelled their name "Larned" and pronounced it LAR-ned. Eunice Larned was the mother of congressman Thomas Allen;  her brother, Colonel Benjamin Franklin Larned, (1794-1862), Paymaster of the United States Army, gave his name to the Fort Larned, Kansas, and the nearby town of Larned, Kansas. (I am related to the Learned family in multiple ways, all quite remote.)

Several towns, all very small.

  • Temvik, ND - name combination of Ed Larvik and the Tempel brothers (uncles to my grandmother). Town is now abandoned.
  • Broadwell, Ohio - named after gr-gr-grandparents (+/- a generation). Town has 2 roads and a church last I checked.
  • Broadwell, Illinois - this is a little bigger, population 136! It was on Route 66, but now just off the interstate. Named after a 3rd cousin couple times removed.
  • Bean Settlement, West Virginia - unincorporated. Has a church and graveyard with a whole lot of Bean ancestors.

Two roads have been named after my ancestors. Johnson Road and Needham Drive, both located as borders to the family farms. Every time I drive by either one, memories of different family stories and members bring a smile to my face.

The Lady Wulfrun of Mercia founded the town of Wolverhampton, named after her,  (985) and its church (994). Admittedly the link with me requires a few educated guesses around the year 1000, and I haven't counted the generations, but she was an impressive person. Before I retired as Rector of Norton, we lived near a road on the outskirts of Sheffield called Bunting Nook, which was named after some of my father's ancestors. Now we live near King Ecgbert Road, named after an ancestor who was King of Wessex, and swore a treaty with the King of Northumbria nearby.

A street in Canberra Australia was named after my mother's niece Katie Cowan.

She was a vaudeville artist in the 20s and later and her stage name was Amy Rochelle.

The street was named Rochelle street. Very sad that my mother was not still alive when this happened, as she was very proud of Katie.

Named for Captain Thomas Howard, Howard Gap Road terminated in the open span of ancient savannah grasslands and dense cane breaks bordering Cane Creek in Fletcher. River cane, an indigenous plant, was used by Native Americans and early pioneers, who stripped cane for making baskets, chair bottoms, even pots and water vessels. Captain Thomas Howard was my 5th great grandfather.
