There is a

Project: Dutch Roots/Naming Convention !

If, in fact, they do not already exist, when will similar concessions be made with respect to ' French ' , ' Italian ' , ' Spanish ' (including ' Basque ' ), ' Portuguese ' , etc., etc,. naming conventions ?

Who decides the content of the particular ' page '  ? Who decides the spelling, grammar, punctuation, etc. ? Who inputs the info. once finally determined ?

Hi Phil, The naming conventions page is part of the Dutch Roots project, and yes, anyone can join projects at WikiTree. As far as other projects with naming conventions, several use pages like that to clarify how things are done like the Cymru Welsh project and New Netherland Settlers. Further conventions would be looked at once projects for those regions develop. Who decides this? The Project Leaders, Coordinators, and members, often using discussion on G2G. It just depends on the project's focus and goal. They always aim to use what that person used as a last name during their own lifetime and language, no matter the project, in line with the WikiTree Style guide and rules.

Thanks, Abby.

Random thought to add: I like to think of establishing style conventions (and category names) as a process of discovering the right ones.

Very few of them are arbitrary decisions. There's usually a right thing to do. It's just hard to know, and often it's a step by step process, i.e. you can't cross a bridge until you come to it.

Members have to be working in the same area, conflicts arise, they collaborate (we call this a project), draft rules are written, they're tested and modified as necessary, other rules build on those ...

I was looking for something today & realized that the Style Guide didn't include a link to one of the naming convention pages I refer to (I sent a message to the project manager with information on how to correct that).

In the meantime, I created a page with all such pages I could find (& their project) & added it to the Style Guide:

Space:Name Field Guidelines

If anyone knows of pages I've missed, let me know.

Cheers,
Liz
