Starting a One-Name Study

We have a small group of dedicated WikiTree members who would like to start a One-Name Study. (We checked, and it does not currently exist as a Category.)

Would any of you please share a One-Name Study Category page that you think is well set-up so we can look at it for ideas on how to organize such a study? TIA for sharing!

Here's the post for requesting a new study, Carole

One Name Studies on WikiTree

Unless I'm misunderstanding, and you're actually wanting to start a Guild One-Name Study?

Thanks, Amy. I found that page and yes, I think we ARE wanting to start one. We will follow that procedure when we are actually ready to get going.

What I wanted to see was how a really “helpful and clear” page might be set up. But I can see lots of examples available from the page, so I guess my question is answered.

Hi Carole

There is a process for requesting a Name Study, and unfortunately I am on my phone right now so I don't have the link to share.  I'll be in touch this evening to help you with this.

A couple of things : There is a "formal" organization for this, the Guild of One Name Studies, that can provide a lot of resources and assistance in set up, website hosting, and how you want to go about creating your one name study.

The wikitree guidelines for a One Name Study are here: https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Project:One_Name_Studies

You submit it, and then they review it, create your page, and add you to it.

As far as the Guild of One Name Studies, they have a mailing list as well as member only resources.  However, the majority of resources appear to be based in England / Europe, so I'd just keep that in mind. https://one-name.org/  If the surname you're looking at is listed THERE, it may be worthwhile to contact the existing study coordinator to see if you can collaborate somehow versus replicating efforts via wikitree.

Thanks, Lauren. The name we're considering is not listed there. Although we're pretty sure they're British heritage, not much – if anything – has yet been done to tie them back to any homeland. They were in Pennsylvania Province by the mid-1600s (proven by land and probate sources) and have quite enough US-dwelling descendants to keep us busy for the rest of our natural lives!

You may (or may not) be interested in a thread called "Stuff I put on my One Name Study pages", where I list the Wiki "source code" of different elements I put up on those pages.

I have received numerous compliments on the Rowland study.  Here is the link:  https://rowlandgenealogy.com/

In addition to the DNA pages, one of the most popular pages is the page for famous ancestors: https://rowlandgenealogy.com/famous-rowlands/

Wow! Ron that is an incredible web site. I must say that I especially loved the story of "Roland the Farter." Seemed like a character out of Monty Python & the Holy Grail. Thanks for sharing!
