Hear Ye, Hear Ye

If you are interested in people who are famous, notable, noted, significant, important, historic, heroic, or otherwise fascinating, then the Notables Project might be for you!

The idea behind this post is for anyone who needs help with connecting Notables to the tree to post to this thread and ask for help, or if you want to tell us whom you have successfully connected up, or if you want to join the Notables Project and get a badge.

Besides checking out the Notables Project page, don't forget to take a look at the Notables List page, where you can find lists of Notables who have profiles which aren't yet connected to the main tree. (For ideas on way to connect unconnected people and branches, see the Hints and Tips on the Connectors Chat page.)

Please remember to concentrate on those Notables who have already passed (died), so that we can see their profiles. If you create a profile for a living Notable, that profile WILL GO UNLISTED and no one can see it except for the PM and anyone on the trusted list!

And remember - Notables should have a Wikipedia page at the very least to qualify. But an entry in the country's NATIONAL Whose Who or a NATIONAL Biography  is acceptable as well. And they preferably should be DEAD!

The George Harrison (Beatles) profile has some completely incorrect information starting with the grandparents, paternal. I have done extensive George Harrison Genealogy and on a Welsh genealogy page somebody also went into his Welsh ancestry which does not jibe with what is on wikitree. Anybody who wants to handle George Harrison I have made on Ancestry a very detailed family tree with sourcing throughout using Liverpool and Lancashire records. If anybody wants access I will allow access with an email address. Michael

I just finished connecting a small island of unconnected profiles (maybe 125 or so) that were surrounding the Notable August Derleth. His connection should show in the morning.

I found your notables project while researching my 10th great grandmother, Rebecca Towne. Is this the correct post to answer to for joining?
by Rachel Bauerle G2G3 (3.9k points)
It is, yes. And you have asked to join so no need to do anything further.

But since this is the weekend of 4 July 2022, there may be a few days delay before you get your badge!! LOL
Welcome to the Notables Team!

I have started on a new project - to connect Superman to the tree... well, not "quite" Superman, but one of his creators, Jerry Siegel. I've done a number of improvements to his profile, including adding his wives, deceased children, and updating his biography. Still no connection in sight, but I've got several brothers and sisters to add, their husbands/wives, and then a slew of nephews/nieces and their families. Not to mention that his wife Joanne Kovacs has parents and a sister to add, and any one of them could begin to lead towards a connection. So lots to do, and hopefully we'll see a connection in the near future.

by Scott Fulkerson G2G Astronaut (1.5m points)
Well, I'm happier that he now has a biography and family attached, but no connection in place. 18 profiles in his tree so far, but none that appears to lead to a connection. More work ahead.
Growing slowly - haven't had a lot of time online lately - but up to 23 profiles. He's not on the radar yet of those with large unconnected trees, but if I keep adding, he'll get there - or we'll find a connection.
Hang in there you will find one! Somewhere! :)
29 profiles - still working on this. Got distracted for a bit by Abe Vigoda, but he's connected now. And then I picked up a biography on Eric Dickerson, so I ran down that rabbit trail. But back on this one now and hoping I'm heading towards a potential connection. We'll see how it goes before the next rabbit or squirrel crosses my path.

Scott, Can we please open the profile for Robert Bigelow, hotel and aerospace entrepreneur. He has about 10 wikipedia pages.
by N Gauthier G2G6 Pilot (293k points)
I can only open it if both Notables and myself are profile managers on the profile. I was able to add the PPP, but that's all it will let me do.
sorry that was a profile I created a while back before I knew what was required You are now manager.
His privacy has been updated - thanks!

Today, I discovered that my grandfather's second cousin Abraham Martinius Erichsen has a lenghty article in the German Wikipedia. I posted a separate "question" about him, but I hope that it's okay to mention him here too.

I'm uncertain if the German Wikipedia article merits a "Notable" status. And of course it would be great if someone with German background could expand his WikiTree profile.

by Leif Biberg Kristensen G2G6 Pilot (207k points)
I know your fellow now has a Notables Sticker (and you got your other question answered by Jelena), so I'm here only to say a Wikipedia entry is a Wikipedia entry, no matter what the language is.
Thank you, Melanie. I was in doubt because there's no mention of him neither on the Norwegian nor the English Wikipedia, and the German article is probably written by a relative. But I know that the Germans have (or at least had some years ago) a rather strict line as to whether someone is deemed "worthy" of a Wikipedia entry.

If people who did almost nothing have a one-line "biography" page, I wouldn't worry too much about a page done by a relative.  smiley

Because our project is strongly based on Wikipedia as a foundation point, if Wikipedia has accepted the person as a valid page, then our project automatically accepts them as well - regardless of language.
Thank you, Scott. I've added the Notables project as manager of the profile.

Still working on Living Notables - just noting this here even though you want only deceased Notables.  Latest one is Matthew Lewis (he was Neville Longbottom in the Harry Potter franchise).

We're still accepting living Notables, but due to the complexities of who can and cannot, should and should not handle the sensitivities of living Notables, we tend to recommend steering away from creating living Notables unless you're an experienced WikiTreer. Between the privacy laws, the potential sensitive topics related to a living person, the need to be cautious about what names to mention and not to mention in a biography, the controversies that should be mentioned and others not... it can quickly get someone into a "discussion" that a new person might not be prepared for. However, I suspect you're well aware of all these and more, and can manage them with no issues. The only thing I might ask is that we add Notables to the Trusted List of these if we can. I've put in a request, but I try to have Notables at least on the TL of these just in case there's something that Notables can do either now or in the future. I'm about 100% confident that the England Project will do great with him, but I try to make this a general practice as I've seen other projects unfortunately lose steam at some point and Notables has had to step in to pick them back up. I seriously doubt that will ever happen with England though.
Notables Project added to Matthew's TL. :)
Notables Project also added to the TL of:
Richard Bremmer-113
Peter Noone-346
Petula Clark-73604
Sir Tony Robinson-49087
Ian Hart (Davies-14868)
Dame Julie Walters-6028

These are all Living Notables

I don't know if joining another project is a good idea but as a member of the Native Americans Project, I'm finding myself wanting to add several profiles who should also be categorized as Notables; some for more than one reason.
by Lorraine O'Dell G2G6 Mach 4 (42.0k points)
We don't require that you join the project officially, but we would welcome you if you would like to join. Notables crosses into essentially all other projects in some fashion or another due to the nature of notable persons being found everywhere and in everything. So if you would like to be a part of another project, but work on a few Notables here and there, please feel free. I'd just recommend reviewing the guidelines on the way they are handled, make sure to add the Notables Project account as manager to any profile of a Notable who doesn't have another project as manager already, and to the Trusted List regardless, and maybe drop in now and then and let us know what you're working on so that others with an interest might add to it.
Thank you.  I probably won't join the project but will remind projects that I am a member of about guidelines for Notables, particularly Living Notables, which I need to refresh myself with.  Thank you.

He is not connected yet.
Looks like his parents were both German. Perhaps some of our German friends could work on making a connection. Another route could be throgh his late-wife, Sheila Ryan.Wikitree has no information on her
Actuarlly more possibilities because all together he had 4 wives - whose names are on his wikipedia page. For privacy reasons, the possibly still living ones are not named on his wikitree profile.

I think this is the father of his first wife, see her name in her sister’s obit and father’s obit

I see at
https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Project:Notables#Goals
that "Leaders are now able to open the privacy on certain living Notables that fit the criteria outlined in the new rules".

This should probably be time-proofed by giving the date of the "new" rules, since these rules will eventually become "old".

More importantly, there should be a hyperlink to the rules, whether they are elsewhere on the same web page or on some other page.

Then I might be able to figure out which of the "new" rules does not apply to what appears to be the interim/caretaker/acting Prime Minister of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, [[Johnson-66533|Alexander Boris de Pfeffel Johnson]].  His profile manager is Notables Project WikiTree, but the profile is unlisted.

As I have commented on the profile of [[Johnson-66370|his paternal grandfather]], the latter's LNAB should be Kemal, as per biography and birth index; he became Johnson only much later in life.  I use this family as a well-known example of a recent surname/DNA switch when giving talks about Y-DNA, and it would be nice to be able to link to accurate profiles on WikiTree for those not familiar with the Johnson/Kemal family history.
by Paddy Waldron G2G6 Mach 6 (60.9k points)
I imagine it means the rules on this page:
https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Help:Living_Notables#Eligibility_Requirements

Opening the privacy means changing it from black and only viewable by the Trusted List, to bright-gold and viewable by anyone (but they can't edit it).

The 'new rules' went live in 2018, and the Living Notables policy was amended in 2021.
Thanks, Ros.

The rules on privacy that I could not find appear to be in a later section of the page to which you provided the link.

Boris Johnson certainly appears to meet the criteria in the Eligibility Requirements section, not least because he first came to my own attention many years ago when he was the subject of an episode of Who Do You Think You Are.

I am left to infer that his profile has been "set at a more-restrictive Private privacy level" than "Private with a Public Family Tree and Biography" because that must have been "requested by the person themselves or a member of their nuclear family".

Is there any way to figure out whether such a privacy request has been made before one contacts the leaders of the appropriate project, who presumably wont want a deluge of contacts about notables like Johnson, which might go on for years after such a request?
I would suggest you send a Trusted List request - but access will only be granted if you are a 2nd cousin or closer. (See Living Notables policy).

You can indeed contact the Notables Project (since they are the PM).  I don't know (but I doubt) that his profile has remained closed because of a privacy request by a family member.  It may just be that the Project hasn't got around to opening it yet.  Your query may remind them to do this.
We will also allow long-term members of the Notables project who have proven responsibility by working with non-living Notables for a significant period of time to join the trusted list of a living Notable, but generally I try to look at what work that person has done over that period of time, and determine if they have been around long enough to be able to be added. The list, as one might expect, is a relatively small one at the moment.

Other projects have adopted a similar approach, so there are few who are granted access to edit profiles of living persons that a project manages.

Manga creator Kazuki Takahashi (real first name being Kazuo) died on July 6th, 2022. He is most well known for the hugely successful "Yu-Gi-Oh!" manga and expanded franchise. I am not sure if he already has a wikitree profile yet or not.
by Robert Ward G2G6 Mach 3 (33.2k points)
I believe this is his profile. It's been updated with his date of death.

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/%E9%AB%98%E6%A9%8B-121

Sadly, he's unconnected, but someone might consider trying to add family to him if you are familiar with Japan genealogy sources.

Oprah Winfrey's father, Vernon Winfrey, passed away last night. He has a profile, as does Oprah, but they are not connected to each other. Oprah is semi-private so either the Notables or the African-American project will need to make the connection.

Also, this tree is severely lacking in detail if anyone would enjoy fleshing it out.

by David Randall G2G6 Pilot (349k points)
I saw where he has apparently not been properly verified as her father, other than possibly by being the most likely candidate, so I don't know if the profile owners will want him added as "questionable" or just mentioned in the biography. Either way, he played an important part in her life and should be included somehow.
I am not a follower of Oprah's life story, but I do know that Vernon Winfrey is the man she considered to be her father and whose name she has always carried. Personally, I think Oprah should be connected to the Winfrey line until proven otherwise. A note about the "controversy" could be placed in her bio. Alternativly, if we are not ready to make a connection, a link to his profile could be placed in her biography, again with an explaination of the "controversy". Either way, I think it's important that the two profiles be linked.

Comedian Larry Storch died at the age of 99. Surprisingly, he does not have a profile. Yet.
by Scott Fulkerson G2G Astronaut (1.5m points)
Used to love F Troop reruns when I was a kid. He will be missed.
Forest Tucker of F Troup in now connected.  https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Tucker-4086
Good job Russell.
Nice work on Forest Tucker! We'll see if we can get something going on Larry Storch soon.
There's no bio but this looks like it might be Larry Storch ...

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Storch-246
That's the correct Larry Storch. I added a few biographical details, but his profile could still use a lot of fleshing out.

I made Mr. Storch's profile more presentable.

trying to connect James Caan but connected this notable instead. he needs a notable sticker.

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/St._John-4702

by S Stevenson G2G6 Pilot (249k points)
for those attempting to connect James Caan, for his wife, there is a very bad tree at Ancestry. it uses a death certificate of a different person (same name different death date and location) to base her parents on. anyway it lead me off in a wrong direction but got this branch connected instead.
Sticker, wikidata item, and a couple of categories added.

Scott, Can we please open the profile for LIVING former basketball player,

Brenda Tarpley is one of this month's highlighted profiles. Nowhere in her profile, however, is there any mention of the fact that she is best known to most people as legendary singer Brenda Lee. Seems like an important fact to include. Her profile is private, but it is managed by the Notables Project.

by David Randall G2G6 Pilot (349k points)
It is mentioned, but because of the privacy, it's hard to see. Nicknames are supressed with that level of privacy. We'd have to rewrite her biography to add more details. I'm tied up at the moment, but I'll add a small blurb at the top to mention it.
