Germany Project Connector's Challenge July 2022: Physicists

Hi all,

The Germany Project invites again all members (not only of the Germany Project but of the whole WikiTree) to come together and try to connect some people to the Big Tree. This time I chose to take people Steven Greenwood collected on the Space Page about German inventors and discoverers. I focused on Physicists as there is quite a bunch of them on the list.

So this month's profiles are:

Ernst Abbe, an optician who lived and worked mainly in today's East Germany

Daniel Gabriel Fahrenheit, the Fahrenheit temperature unit is named after him.

Johann Wilhelm Ritter discovered the Ultraviolet Rays and

Ernst Ruska invented the electron microscope and got the Nobel Prize (Connected!) Thanks Manu and Flo!

Let's go and have fun!

I will try my luck with Ernst Ruska...

He should be quite easy to connect. The family of his brother-in-law (von Borries) has already some people in here.
That´s what I hope, that it´s easy:-) His father and maternal grandfather are also notables. I think this should help.

Hi Flo (and all the others), I am happy with any help I can have with Ernst Ruska.

I added several ancestors and relatives, but so far I am always coming to a point where I have no sources to connect them.

 • His father-in-law Carl Geigis is maybe related to other Geigis profiles from Schramberg, e.g. Josef Geigis
 • his brother-in law Bodo von Borries definitely is related to other von Borries profiles, but haven´t found sources yet to verify the relationship
 • his uncle Max Wolf also looks promising...
Maybe it helps if somebody else has a look at it:-)

I've found the birth date of Carl Geigis, but unfortunately no parents. I asked around: https://discourse.genealogy.net/t/geigis-in-schramberg/789932

Done.

Found one of his direct ancestors on Wikitree Cäcilie Wilhelmine Meier

Connection to the global tree should how up in a few hours:-)

Pretty cool, think I will call city archives of Schramberg anyway
Would be great if you could check the city archives of Schramberg.

I just had a closer look at the profile of Cäcilie Wilhelmine Meier. There might be an issue with conflated profiles. Birth and death dates/places are the one for the Ruska ancestors. But second spouse and children do not fit... If that´s true, than we would have to split her profile and the connection will be lost again...

Bingo. Found another way to connect Ernst Ruska. He should be connected in the next hours via Hortense Cäcilie von Frantzius from Danzig ( a profile that Jelena had created some time ago :-)

Good job. Looks like next week somebody will go to Schramberg and check.
Oh the small German nobility nobody heard of before. Seems like creating all those profiles finally served its purpose.

Received birth record via a helpful Discourse member. He is now indeed connected via Geigis-6 as well.

I can try and fill in some ancestors of Ernst Abbe. His mother comes from Eisenach. If the family line goes back long enought in this city, there is a chance that I can link them to my own ancestry somehow.

Ok. I went up the line till his great grandfather Johann August Noll, who came from Wickenrode in Hessen.

This is only 8 km and 40 years away from Reinhard Noll, who is already connected.

Should it be possible to fill the gap? I'll have a look at it later today.

Finished creating profiles for all his ancestors back 5 generations. Till now it doesn't look like there is any connection close by. Also the Noll family is hard to deal with since there are so many of them in such a small area. Seems to be a project of itself to unravel them. :(
Great job! Even though he is not connected yet. We still do not have so much profile from this area which makes it really difficult to find a connection. But the time will come… :-)
I can't access the source given in most of his ancestor's profiles (sbc.org.pl is offline at the moment), but I compared a few of the profiles against the data in the church records. There were some interesting results about Siebert-804, including wrong birth and death dates, an unconfirmed name, and two more generations that can be added. Have these already been found and just not added yet? Either way, I am not participating in the Connect-a-thon (is this project part of it? I don't want to steel points). I'll leave adding the profiles to those who care. Compare the research notes in that profile for sources and details.

I was born about 40 miles from Oberkaufungen, so there is a non-zero chance that Ernst Abbe can be connected through me.

EDIT: Sorry if the question about the Connect-a-thon is stupid.
You're not steeling anything. The challenge is to find a connection within this month (if possible) so any added profile is much appreciated. I would do it but have to ration my time somehow.

Thanks for rechecking the source. I only had this secondary source at hand and concentrated my effords to the city Eisenach. So if you have time and are up for the challenge, please feel free to check and add profiles in "your" region.

Thanks Danny! I'll give it a go. smiley

Interesting.  My sister-in-law is an Eisenach.  Her grandfather immigrated from there.
There is a chance that a connection might (eventually) be found via Hupfeld-12, see my comment there. However, this is still a long shot.
One could try Hupfeld-13 in combination with the printed family book: https://wiki.genealogy.net/Gro%C3%9Falmerode,_OFB
Looks like sbc.org.pl is back!

Since Manu took away the guy from Baden, I had a look at Fahrenheit.

- mother was from merchant family Schuhmann in Danzig, which might have some potential

- about the origins of his father I found a paper: https://task.gda.pl/files/quart/TQ2003/03/TQ307Z-C.PDF

- here there are some brothers mentioned

I'm checking back the surnames mentioned in the paper with the surname list of WikiTree. Actually I don't see any names in there that have a connection to Danzig.

Johann Willhelm Ritter was married and had children:

Am 17.6.1804 Hochzeit mit Dorothea Catharina Münchgesang (1785-1823), der Hausangestellten seines Jenaer Wirtes (Geburt der ersten Tochter im August des gleichen Jahres, der drei weitere Kinder folgten). [source]

- See also https://daten.digitale-sammlungen.de/0001/bsb00016339/images/index.html?seite=678 , which might be a bit better as "proper" source.

- Wedding record and remarks about it

- She was from Weißensee, only 12km from Werningshausen, where our Münchgesang came from (this name basically screams for a One Name Study)

- book with wedding record also mentions a sister in law named Helene.

- This FS profile might be his father in law and points to Wundersleben

- in this name index on a private website there is also a path from Weißensee to Wundersleben

- there also was a major Christian Ferdinand Münchgesang , geb. am 18. Januar 1780 zu Wundersleben , gest . am 15. November 1867 zu Erfurt) - [Google Books

Is Werner Heisenberg already connected? Most of his children are private. So I can't tell. Update: looks like he is connected through his wife.

Yes, he is. When you scroll down to the bottom you see the list "Werner is xx steps from [the Profile of the Week]".

I don't have much to say about the people listed, but I went ahead and created - and linked - Wilhelm Gliese. His mother was born about 5 miles from where I grew up, and his great-grandmother comes from a village where I have indexed the church records. I have added only a single line that links him to me (selfish, I know laugh), but I can expand that in the future. The tree can also be expanded a lot using the linked "Familiendatenbank NLF" (see sources).

Hi,

This only one I connect to in any way

Ernst Ruska is 28 Degrees from Billie Keaffaber

Billie
by Billie Keaffaber G2G6 Mach 4 (41.3k points)
True Billie, Ernst Ruska is (so far) the only one of the four physicists who is connected. The other ones still need to be connected. The Germany Project supports WikiTree's Year of Connections by oing these challenges to connect some people from Germany.
