July 2022 Connect-a-Thon Wrap-up

Hello WikiTreers!

Our third Connect-a-Thon event of 2022 has come to an end.

Our goal was to bring the world closer together by adding more people to our big tree and increasing the chances to connect. To do this we spent 72 hours adding missing relatives.

The weekend was so much fun, and a great success! Thank you all for participating and helping grow our global tree. These grand shows of community effort are just amazing!

We added 87,731 profiles over the weekend! This is 3,343 more than in April, which is pretty amazing considering we had 85 less people register. Here are some highlights from the event:

Thirty-two teams participated, including the new team Banyan Trees. An incredible 23 of those teams added more than 1,000 profiles each!

Tip: You can easily remove yourself from profiles you created but don't want to manage. Just go to https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Special:WatchedList and click on the "Watchlist Changes" button in the row, then select the link where it says "If you'd like to remove yourself from Trusted Lists that you've been added to just recently...click here" under "Remove yourself from Trusted Lists."

I read the story about Jim Loden and how he won the last CAT.  So I decided to try his method.  I decided to work on the 1870 census for Spartanburg county, South Carolina. So that was a particularly difficult census to chose.  Spartanburg lost a lot of men to the civil war and there were many women listed as “Farmer”.  But I have roots there and it’s where I’ve been focusing my current research so I pushed forward.  I started with the first page and made it through the third page.  There were many African American families as well.  So as I posted the profiles for them, I added the African American tag and stickers.  It was somewhat rewarding as I have been working to connect my heritage with the many African American dna matches from ancestry.  Every time I work on a thon, I learn so much!  I’ll be going back to my thon profiles and see what sources I can add.

I also posted on my FB page on Mon when the Connect-a-Thon ended. I have now had two genealogy people ask questions about WikiTree and the CaThon.  Hoping they join up!
