In many years of research I have never come across 'Thomas' as an alternative/additional name for Elias. I've always speculated him to be his brother.
But then again, I would never rule out two brothers bearing the same names. In times of high child mortality it seems parents sometimes gave the same name to another child, hoping that at least one survived. And sometimes both did. I have found this quite frequently in Germany and also less frequently in the US.
