Creating and changing categories

I have a question, maybe you can help. I am setting up a page for the United States Wester District Court of Arkansas https://www.wikitree.com/index.php?title=Space:United_States_District_Court_for_the_Western_District_of_Arkansas&public=1. (still work in progress)

I'm planning on building profiles for those you worked for the court primarily under Judge Isaac Parker. I want to categorize the occupations. I see a "United States Marshals" category exist, but it is an orphan. I think the structure should be a little different.

https://www.wikitree.com/index.php?title=Category:United_States_Marshals

Top Level can be under the category United States Law Enforcement.

The sub-level for this, which is currently "United States Marshals", should be renamed "United States Marshal Service".

Under the level of United States Marshal Service" should be districts. I see there is one for Arizona, I would add "Western District of Arkansas", and others could be at the remaining districts as needed.

Under the districts would be the occupations; I see at least 4, United States Marshals, United State Deputy Marshalls, and United State Jailers, United State Posses.

United State Jailers have Guards working for them, so we would have a sub-level under Jailers.

I don't know if I can change any of this or who to contact, since it is currently orphaned.  Anyway, I'm interested in the occupations that policed the area under Judge Isaac Parker for the Western District of Arkansas. Any thoughts?

I don't agree with the rename to United States Marshals Service.

Categories are used as a way to group profiles - and in this case, United States Marshals is an occupation (through the Occupations hierarchy). The category hierarchy I believe you are wanting to setup or transform this into would be for the agency itself (not a single job title).

This new type of hierarchy may involve the occupations of the US Marshals Service (the agency), as well as the different judicial districts and its overall structure.

If this is what you had in mind, see: Proposing Category Structures.

I see that the category is not in fact orphaned (edit to add ah the space is) as it comes under United States, Law Enforcement created in 2019 which I understand is what you were wanting. If it is simply a matter of changing the category name then you can do that by first creating the new category United States Marshal Service and then renaming the old one to it with {{Rename Category|United States Marshal Service}} or {{Merge Category|United States Marshal Service}} if you want to allow the bot to transfer the text from the old category to the new. This will change the category for the Pages and the 45 profiles once the bot has done its work.

Natalie Trott created the page on 3rd March a year ago and this can be renamed by two methods. Before the second you will need to adopt the page.

1) Change the title by putting the correct title in the first field in edit mode. This will then display the correct title but the page will still be Space:United States Marshals.

2) Create a new space United States Marshal Service and then merge the old one into it using

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Special:MergeSpace

or editing the old page and going to the bottom and clicking on merge.

If you are stuck with any of this just PM me and I will sort it for you but first ascertain that changing this category is not stepping on the preserve of any Project.

(ETA: typos)
