Hello Team Missouri!

Team Missouri aka Missouri Cousins covers Missouri and the states that share a border with her, Kentucky, Tennessee, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Kansas, Iowa, Nebraska & Illinois. Missouri is known as the "Show Me" state. We want and need proof!

This post will create a thread where we can work together to coordinate our efforts or just chat. Thank you for volunteering to help and for joining our team. This is the place for the team to ask questions, give advice, see updates, and cheer each other on.

Just a quick reminder for folks!

Once you have saved your changes click on the 'Challenge Tracker' button and select 'Source-a-Thon.' “  This event is NOT auto-tracked you must click the challenge to score the point.

Dear Lori, a gift from me to you (if you don't use it, I will not be offended) - because some folk like to add their participation "bib" to their profile, and because the numbers get recycled year after year —

https://i.postimg.cc/mk4Lzhxq/bib-011-Lori-Zb.png (so you can upload it to something other than my Team's page (feel free to use https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:NoDoubleVision if you don't want it on your profile, or your Team page)

Oh my gosh, Mel! That's so freakin cute!! I love it. Thank you so much!!

In that image overlay, Little Mo is winking (or, at least, is meant to be winking). It was an experiment to see how small I could get the image before it became too blurry to see.
I am happy to add it to any of your Team's bibs, if they'd like it.  smiley

Sorry I couldn't be on two teams, but I enjoyed chatting on Discord.  You did a great job.

I signed up yesterday. I'm gonna win this thing this year!wink (guess the total thingy)

by Luther Brown G2G6 Pilot (557k points)

laughlol yeah, that's about the only way most of us could win this. It would be nice to make the top ten again though, teamwise.

I did get a winners badge last year in the Source-a-thon. I think I finished either top 5 or top 10 individually. And I'll share how I did it. I entered a bunch of sources. lol No pre-planning, no prep just sourced like a fiend. It does help if you can find families that you can source from a single source, like the census. Definitely speeds up the process.

Looking forward to the Thon and sourcing... So many waiting for sources, it should be easy.... lol. Are you-all on Discord?
by Judy Bramlage G2G6 Pilot (213k points)
I have no plans to move the team chat to Discord unless the team would prefer that. This has always worked fine for us.
I vote for Discord. Otherwise, I will have to watch two site

My problem with using something such as discord is that it essentially locks out folk who cannot (for various reasons) use those types of platforms.
At least with g2g everyone who signs up for a 'Thon event can obviously see and use this platform, or they could not have registered.

Just 2c from an outsider.

I absolutely agree. And I don't feel the need to constantly watch this thread. I get an email when there's a post or reply and that has always worked just fine.

I've seen folks that prefer to be with a team that doesn't use Discord. I personally have never felt the need to be on it. Just something else to deal with.
Sounds good to me..I actually prefer chatting in this format
I enjoy the additional socialization Discord provides. I live with a sister that doesn't talk much, so am often lonely.

Better with someone who doesn't talk much, than to be alone and have to rely on you being in the right mood to answer yourself. cheeky

I didn't know wikitree had a discord till now. Just joined it
Our team currently is not doing Discord for the marathons. Just to let you know. We will be chatting here.
I get that, I just joined the discord because I'm always in it. Never know what I see in there that may help

I'd be proud to be a part of this team for the 2022 Source-A-Thon.  I believe my number is 450.
by Leilani Worrell G2G3 (3.1k points)
Good morning & welcome! We love having new folks join us. A lot of us are distant cousins so if you haven't done it already, you might want to run a few of your teammates thru the relationship finder to see if you're a cousin too.

Happy to be on team MO.  I am working on a Missouri based mystery that would be awesome to solve!!!
by Janet Godsey G2G6 (6.8k points)
Okay, you can't just say that without giving us some of the details. lol Inquiring minds need to know.

I'm still trying to solve what happened to my great grandfather. Been trying to solve that one for 25 years.
I just found out mine went to jail for bigamy.

surprise

Well, bright side is there's records to be found. Mine on my Daddy's side never did anything of note and I can't find evidence they even attended church. Makes it difficult to get info from additional sources when you can't find them in the standard ones, like the census & marriage records, etc.

Thanks for the suggestion to check the relationship finder for the team members and I found I am VERY distantly related to 7 members of this team...so Hello Cousins!
by Linda Ducharme G2G6 Mach 1 (11.2k points)
Cool!
Yes, we are all cousins!  Whether we know it or not!

I have been searching for details about one of my paternal aunts who died at age 2 in 1872.  Her name was Mary Godsey and she was the 4th generation of Godseys living in Van Horn Township, Carroll Co., MO but the family records say she died in Jasper Township, AR where her grandmother lived.  I have been unable to find any details about her death or where she was buried.  Any help would be amazing!
by Janet Godsey G2G6 (6.8k points)
I can definitely understand the problem. I'm having problems finding an adult that died in the 1880s. Children can be difficult unless there's a death record or something on Find A Grave. Plus she was born after the 1870 census and died before the 1880 census. Did you find your ancestors in the 1875(maybe1876?) Missouri census?

Since my mystery relative was born in November of 1870 and died in August of 1872, she never appeared in a census.  I do know that there were a couple of local Missouri newspapers during that period but I am having trouble finding them.  They are not on Newspapers.com and the local library I called who has them on microfilm has a gap that includes 1872.  If anyone has access to Aug/Sep Missouri newspapers from Carroll County - I would appreciate knowing where to find them.

Good morning my Missouri Cousins! We have a LOT of new folks joining us, I mean as in folks that have NEVER thonned! I'm going to do my best to help them as they need help but may need a few of my veterans to help out as well.

Who are my helpful cousins??
by Lori Zukerman G2G6 Pilot (153k points)
Normally, I would jump right up to volunteer to be one of your "helpful cousins" but my nephew did not consult me before scheduling his wedding for this weekend!  So I have limited connectivity, but will help whenever I can get to it!
You know I appreciate you, cousin Bart! Any help would be wonderful and enjoy that wedding!!

Hello Team Missouri! New to the team, but not new to WikiTree. (Been gone a bit due to health, but back at it now!) I've done one Source-A-Thon, way back when so may take me a minute to get back in the swing of things.

Being on Team Missouri is going to be awesome as that is where almost all my ancestors up to my 2rd great grandparents were born, and where up to my 4th great-grandparents settled. I still live in Missouri (at the Lake of the Ozarks).

Anyways, can't wait to get started and meet my fellow team mates.
by Laurie Wentz G2G5 (5.5k points)
Great to meet you Laurie! Happy to have you joining us for the "thon".

My great-great grandparents moved from Lewis, Kentucky to Daviess county, MO during the 1850s and by 1900 my direct ancestors had left for Oklahoma. Many of my great aunts and uncles either stayed in Daviess or relocated to Clay county so I've done a bit of work in both counties.

I'm looking forward to having a fun weekend sourcing!
My paternal grandmother is from Gallatin, that's where her paternal grandfather landed when he moved from Indiana. I have family still in Daviess County, with a few of them having moved to Gentry County (McFall area).
I had one great uncle, Lewis Beckett that lived in Gallatin around 1910. The rest of the family lived in Pattonsburg, Salem and Benton. If you happen across any Becketts, I'm probably related to them.
Have you run into an issue finding family in the 1870 census and if so, how did you solve it? Most of my Becketts are missing from the census. 1860 & 1880, I can find them no problem.
I do have an issue with the 1870 census, or did, for some of the family. My issue is the last name -- Hershberger. The family thought it would be fun if each one of the sons spelled it a different way and then had their children each spell it a different way. I pretty much now, just go to Ancestry and search each page line by line. It's time consuming, but it was the only way I have found so far.
I could see how that might be a huge problem. I've only seen mine spelled Becket, Beckett, Bechet or Bickit. I look at Becker, Bechette and other variations. Only thing I can think of is that maybe they are with a family friend or family with a different last name and that's how they got recorded, with a different last name. I've definitely seen that.

Good morning everyone, I’m excited to join y’all for my first Source a thon  I’m newish to wikitree too, but I’m a fast learner, especially with tech-y things so I don’t think I’ll need too much help.

My mom was the first in 6+ generations on her dads side to NOT be born in Southeast Missouri, but also my husband has roots in Daviess County that I’ve just been smitten with, so I work with Missouri profiles quite a bit. I will probably stick to those areas for sourcing this weekend.

A couple of observations-

I've run into quite a few profiles already that the unsourced banner doesn't show because it was improperly formatted. You can't see it until you go into edit mode.

ALWAYS check relatives! Many of them will be unsourced and you can pick up additional profiles easily that way.

Good morning all! Sourced a few profiles before I start my day. When I get my errands done, I'll work on some more.

Congrats to Luther on getting drawn for a prize this morning.

Have an awesome day everyone!
by Laurie Wentz G2G5 (5.5k points)
Good morning Laurie! Thanks for all you've done so far. I think the team has done well so far & I'm hoping the other half of the team shows up at some point. We could really rock this if we get more of the team working.

Congrats Luther!!!
Thanks Laurie and Lori for the kudos on winning the drawing.

Final team numbers. Great showing for Jay, Laurie, Jer and Linda. Thank you all for your hard work!!

by Lori Zukerman G2G6 Pilot (153k points)
5 with triple digits... excellent.
Think of what we could've done had the whole team participated. Most of the weekend it was 17 of 30. We certainly had a respectable showing considering most of the teams around us had between 24-40 members participating.
Thanks to you Lori, for captaining us once again!
I’ll second that…Thank you Lori
