He was born in Virginia in 1810, but in 1863 West Virginia officially became a new state. Elijah may not have moved but rather, the name of the state he lived in may have changed.

Looks like two men named Elijah Griffith were in the 1870 US Census, So, was Harriet his wife in 1870 or was it Anna or Elizabeth?
1860 US Census in Virginia has Elijah Griffith's wife as Elizabeth. This Elijah and his wife had seven children.
