Feature Request: signature to display name instead of ID

When someone uses the ~~~~ to affix the name of the person making comment within a profile, it displays the Wiki ID of the person. I know my fellow genealogists by their names, not their IDs. Could this be changed to display the name instead?

Personally, I prefer the current display of my WikiTree ID.

Perhaps one of the available Signatures could be changed to display one's name, leaving one to display one's ID.

Who knew it was possible to please EVERYONE on an issue? surprise

WikitreeID is unique, while the name is not (some of us are more common than others). However, I don't see why the display of the name would matter if the link to the profile is kept, because it would take you to the right person.

If this is exported to a gedcom, it appears that the wiki code for the link is displayed, so it would still capture both the WikitreeID and the displayed name, even if the code were to be changed.

I also would like to see this change, but I have a hunch it would be rather difficult to implement, as the 3-tilde and 4-tilde signatures that we have now are a standard mediawiki feature. My default signature at Wikipedia is my Wikpedia ID, just as my Wikitree signature is my WikiTree ID.

At Wikipedia, I am known only by the alias I use as my ID, so the default works just fine. However, here on WikiTree I am known almost entirely by my name, so my ID is not an effective identifier. I sometimes go back and insert my name in the display field of signatures generated by the default here. I would appreciate it if the system could do that automatically.

While we are discussing signatures, I think it would be very nice if I could use tildes to sign the notes I add inside footnotes that are created with <ref> tags.  I would sign more such notes if I could do so more easily.wink

I know it takes a minute longer, but once you have saved the page which includes your WikiTree ID, it can be edited to display your name. Look at the page in Edit mode. Results of ~~~~ will look like this, [[Wiki-11|Wiki-11]]. Just change the second "Wiki-11" to your name, then Save.
