Elias Plummer Sanders native American roots or not ? Birth 1775 N.C. death Hart County, Georgia late 1800's.

I was raised being told my parents and grandparents (maternal) that I was part Cherokee. Ancestry.com shows Elias Sanders to be my 3rd great grandfather. I too have been stymied by a lack of information to prove that, I have done both the Ancestry and 23 and Me DNA tests and both turned out negative for Native American heritage. However, they both come with caveats: If your most recent Native American ancestor is five or more generations old, you may not have inherited any DNA or it doesn't show.

Elias Sanders’ son and granddaughter applied for the Eastern Cherokee (Guion Miller) payment and were rejected since they could not show any Cherokee  connection.  No one in the family was on any earlier rolls (Elias was alive at the time of the 1835 census, Siler, and Chapman rolls), the children could not list the names of any parents or siblings for Elias. The Eastern Cherokee applications stated that Elias' wife was a white woman.

They are my gggg grandparents. I took a dna test from cri.genetics and it listed a Native American ancestor that lived around the year 1775 which is the year of Elias' birth.

I am descended from Elias Sanders.  I did a dna test with CRI Genetics and on the advanced timeline report, they show an influx of Native American genetics around 1775 which coincidentally is the birth year of Elias Sanders.

CRI Genetics is not a particularly reliable company.  There is absolutely no record to suggest that Elias Plummer Sanders had any Native American ancestry.  If he was a Cherokee he would have lived in the Cherokee Nation and would not appear on the U.S. Census (Indians weren't U.S. citizens until 1924).  He would not have been able to own land in Georgia.  Every single record for him shows him as white and no census taker in Georgia would have mistaken a Cherokee Indian for a white man at that time.  Georgia was violently involved in the efforts to remove all Indians from their lands in Georgia between 1800 and 1839.   In 1907 60,000 white people tried to get a share of the Eastern Cherokee payment, and in 1896 tens of thousands also tried to claim a share of tribal lands in Indian Territory.  Some genuinely believed they had a Cherokee ancestor, most were simply trying to get land or money they thought was there for the taking.

 Mary Carter was Asian *Indian*

Elias was Cherokee.

Because...

My recent ancestry shows neither native nor asian indian. Most people this many generations down the line have lost any trace of native (America-Ad-Mix) DNA However, I have several  Thruline DNA matches connected thru Elias Plummer Sanders,  that do have Native+South Asian ethnicity.

At least 1 of my  matches with this DNA, is a direct Paternal descendant of Elias Sanders (Paternal ancestor/descendant-direct line of fathers)

I live in the same county as this  match with the Native & Asian DNA, and I am some what aquainted with him & I had no clue we were even related. It is very distant, 5th cousin.

I will try to come back here and post his great Grandfather's name. Of Course his last name is Sanders (Paternal descendant)

Any direct Paternal descendant of Elias Sanders can upgrade a basic DNA test  for a Paternal DNA and trace their *fathers-father- his father and his father and his father....direct line of fathers....Females can not trace their line of fathers, but if you have a brother, you can trace his. Also, your father's brother, or grandfather's brother would be a direct Paternal descendant/ancestors.

So...any Paternal descendants out here willing to take that test? I can not do it because I am not a direct Paternal descendant. My great Grandmother was a Sanders, Daughter of Rev Samuel B Sander's.

Mary Carter was daughter of Thomas Carter. Buried in cemetery on Hwy 51 in Hartwell, Ga. 1775-1850 or 1860, it says. Elias and Mary are buried there along with 3 of their children. Her Mother was not an Indian woman that I find. Elias was the Cherokee, but not on their rolls. Parkers' book says mary's mother was an Indian of the Plummer IndianTribe.  No such tribe. Plummer was name for Elias' mother,  Ellener Plummer in Maryland, who died. Grandparents died , leaving him in will. Possibly or was adopted by Sanders. I am trying to figure out about his birth place. One says NC and other says Maryland. NC was location of Cherokee Nation. His children spoke Cherokee in a he home. I am going this fall to Hartwell to see their grav and others. My aunt lived in Hartwell and I have  her huge binder of information. I am beginning this site and am still adding information ! Peg

I have listed in my family tree a Jeremiah Miller born about 1776 in Virginia who married Orpha (unknown last name) who was born about 1781 in Virginia.They had Sarah Milller who married Calvin P. Sanders, son of Elias Plummer Sanders Sr. and Mary Carter. They also had Prudence Miller who married Lewis Manly Sanders Sr. son of Elias Plummer Sanders Sr and Mary Carter. They were married on 08/05/1824 in Franklin County Georgia.They also had Orpha Miller who married Jonathan P Sanders, son of Elias Plummer Sanders Sr and Mary Carter. So as best as I can tell... three sisters married three brothers. Lewis M Sanders Sr was my ggg grandfather. He and Prudence Miller had William Harrison Sanders who was my gg grandfather. He was born 08/20/1840 in Georgia. He died in Hart County Georgia on 07/22/1922. He married Mary F Evans on 11/12/1865 in Hart County GA. Mary F Evans was born 05/29/1840 in Georgia. She died 05/21/1919.

Comments

Baker and Parkwr's books say Elias' wife was Indian.  Elias was Cherokee,  but due to adoption,  was not on roll. He spoke Cherokee  with family.  Descendents have Cherokee  traits. I am descended from 3 of Elias' children : Samuel B., Patience,  and Calvin P. (JWillis, Samuel Leland, Carol, Me.) , (

If you have taken an ancestry DNA test, look thru your matches and see how many have Asian Indian and Native American DNA. I have found 4-5 matches with Asian Indian and Native American, connected back to Elias and Mary.
