This month’s Bio Builders Challenge theme is People who married in October.

You are not limited to profiles on your Watchlist.

Thank you for your support.

Here's our checklist:

Data Section:

  • birth date/place
  • names of parents
  • marriage date/place and spouse name
  • names of children, if any
  • death date/place

Biography Section:

  • Written (full) sentences stating the facts above, adding inline sources to each fact.
  • Is the profile '''Genealogically Defined?'''
  • As a general rule biographies should be in your own words. Paraphrase and rewrite, don't copy/paste.
  • Baptism, burial, military, and other life events with inline sources.
  • Something to "humanize" the person, such as career or avocation with sources.
  • List of children with at least one pertinent fact.
  • Some list siblings. (I think this takes up real estate.)
  • Explanatory remarks, if needed (e.g. disputed persons information, Research Notes, whatever needs extra explaining).
  • Photos or pictures, background. Not a must, but nice (you need to own the copyright unless they are in the public domain).
  • Categories.
  • Connection to the Global Tree.
  • All duplicates merged or initiated.
  • Links to persons and events, perhaps from Wikipedia.
  • Historical context as related to the person's life.
  • Sources, Sources, Sources.

You can see some ideas on where to find some of this information on the Biography Builders space page.

Use "comments" below to ask questions.

NOTE: Biography Builders will not show on the tracker. Please add a list to your answer.

Is there a way to search for profiles with an October marriage date (on your watchlist or otherwise)? Or can it only be done by looking at each profile?
The pull down menu under My WikiTree (upper right top on any profile you are on). Click Anniversaries. It will list, by date, all the births, marriages, and deaths for the current month.
I click on the Anniversaries list, too.  Then I go one step further and click on "Find on the Page" link in my browser's settings drop-down.
Thank you!

I am very new and haven't tried any of the building challenges. Considering I have two uncles, one blood, one not, born Oct 1st. It seems like a logical place to start. Do I need to add anything else to make it count?

Thanks, LeAnna Blose

Hi LeAnna and welcome! Firstly, this month's challenge is people who were married in October.

Take any profile of someone who was married in October and add as much sourced information as possible. Try to find sources for birth date/place, baptism, marriage, residences, occupation, death/burial date/place, details of parents & children and anything else you can find (eg. Military, newspapers). The more details you can add, the better. Here are examples of a couple of my favourite completed profiles James Henry Mitchell and Mary Smith nee Solly

Michelle, the profiles you gave as examples are extraordinary!
Thanks! If you can find newspaper reports for an ancestor, it can add so much more, but unfortunately most people didn't get mentioned. Most of mine were ag labs lol
Michelle, I agree! I love Newspapers.com and other newspapers archives and search them for everyone I profile.

I spent 20 years thinking my ancestor Sarah Smith had abandoned her husband and family, and with the surname Smith, searching for her seemed impossible, then by chance I found a newspaper entry for her husband George, being summoned for not paying maintenance for her - seemed he had her committed to a mental asylum in another county!

Nelda,

Works for me, but you should try for more records. The more proof, the better.

Bob
Thanks for the feedback, Bob! Everything I could find which mentioned Roenie is presented on the profile. My relatives, especially on the Gilchrist/Gilcrease/Kilcrease side, were not very good at leaving paper trails. I agree with you--the more documentation the better.

Yes, I'll go again. Have about 3 families I was working on last month that I can continue in Oct for marriages now. One man married twice in Oct, 20 years apart.

I like that this challenge seems to help me get profiles in better shape because how I think about them is changing.

Daniel Lyons/Rebecca Barker  6 Oct 1799

Daniel Lyons/Anna Smith  19 Oct 1820

Minnie Etta Wilday   10 Oct 1898

Adeline Chalmers   18 Oct 1924

William Shaver Wilkins   24 Oct 1864

James Sterling   28 Oct 1859
