G2G: Looking for parents of Francis Phillip Longuhay or Harriett Woodcock, who Married 15 feb 1797 London, England

Hi,

I would really appreciate any help with finding the parents of Phillippe Longuehaye (AKA Francis Phillip Longuhay) or Harriett Woodcock.

They Married 15 feb 1797 by licence at St Botolph without Bishopsgate, London, England

both signed & both of this parish and the witness were Henry Woodcock and Sarah Simpson

I’ve found one bap. of a Harriott Woodcook 28 Jul 1772 All Hallows Tottenham. But this has no parents names in the register (not sure why) but may not be her because from her death cert she would be born 1778

Just to add I just found Harriott on the 1841 census and she says she is not born in Middlesex (she died before the 1851) and Phillip before 1841.

Also the name Longuehaye has many different spellings.

Francis Philippe Longuehaye (note correct spelling) was Catholic at the time of his marriage.  He was born in 1763 and died 4 Jan 1821 (from his burial record).  The first born child (Henry Francis) was baptised firstly:

St Patricks, Soho, London - 2 Aug 1799

Roman Catholic - Sponsors: Joseph Paul Henry, Comte de Lavit & Mary Theresa, Comtesse de Gaste, born 20 July 1799

 

Note:  Henry was later baptised - 14 Jul 1815

Bethnal Green St Matthew, England

Church of England - his date of birth was given as 20 July 1798

 

It is more likely 1799 is correct

Confirming the parents is proving very difficult.  The only hint at the moment is the name of the first born child Henry Francis ie Henry.  It is presumed Francis Philippe was born in France but that is far from confirmed.

Just found your post of Jan 2013. Better late than never! I too am stuck when it comes to the origins of Francis Philippe LONGUEHAYE. Fyi here is an extract from some research I did some time ago:

1)      Francis Philippe LONGUEHAYE and Harriett WOODCOCK were married on 15.2.1797 at St. Botolph without Bishopsgate. Witnesses were Henry Woodcock (presumably the bride’s father) and a Sarah SIMPSON, which poses the question, where were Francis Philippe’s parents? Possibly back in France...?

In the 1841 census, Harriett Longuehaye, by now a widow, was living in Whitechapel Road and is shown as a “Boot and shoe maker”. At the time, she had as an apprentice her 15 year-old grandson George MOULDEN, (son of her daughter Victoire Angelica). 

I believe Harriett Woodcock was born 1779 and died 1847. I am particularly interested in the Longuehaye French connection and will try to research the names given by your other respondent.

Do get back to me if you have made any progress in the last year.

Growing up I was told that the Longuehaye family came from Lille and Mons but I have no idea when.

I too am stuck at Phillip and Harriott Woodcock please advise me if you manage to uncover any further records.

Francois Philippe Longuehaye was born in Paris.  He left before the revolution although it is not known when or how. His father was still in Paris in 1792 according to a revolutionary ID card.  One of his sisters married a man of Flemish descent and died in Paris in the 1830's.  All the other siblings disappeared, with one brother dying in 1790.  The records are not digitised and very hard to locate unless you go to France and look through hard copy archives.

It is likely the Longuehaye were of Flemish descent, generally well educated and moved to France in the late 1600's.  Francois' father was a Master Grain merchant, his mother from Val D'Oise and based on her parents names, probably also originally of Flemish descent.  None of them were nobility, but they appear to have been well off merchants and connected to the establishment.

Sorry I've only just picked up your reply, about the Longuehaye family, fascinating stuff thank you for posting, Do you by chance have a name for his parents? I'd love to try and do a bit more research on this line as I seem to have been stumped on it for a long time.

His father was Jean-Baptiste Longuehaye and there is no record of anyone behind him, although he was apparently born in Paris.   

His mother was Martine Elisabeth Philippe. Her ancestry can be tracked back to about 1650 in Val d'Oise.  Martine died in 1780, based on a probate record. All children except her first (who died at birth in 1745), were alive at that time.

I have found another sister (Marie Therese) who married a french widower (when she was about 16) and a brother is listed as having been at architecture school in the mid 1700's.  The are few documents available.  

I suspect I might have been incorrect about them being Flemish and the family were most likely of Walloon origin (I was once told, from Mons).  I also do not believe there is any evidence to support the longterm belief that he was a Baron in terms of inherited title.  It was once thought that they were Hugenot, but they were very definitely Catholic (until Francois changed this on Bastille Day 1815) and well connected to the establishment.

I have not uploaded much to the web so far, although I have put a little onto Geneanet, which is the French site I have used for finding records which others have found, scanned, uploaded and occasionally translated.  It also has links to information from the UK (therefore records relating to Francois' descendants there) and from Belgium (where there are a larger number of Longuehaye's listed).  Although I am only assuming that the Longuehaye's from Paris left Belgium in about the mid to late 1600's.  It was certainly my G G Grandmother's impression that they were originally from Belgium. My Aunt has always believed they had originally come from Mons.  

I am in Australia, descended from Henry Francis (Francois Philippe's oldest son) via Milanie, Henry's youngest daughter from his first marriage.  She arrived in Australia before William Edward, Francois youngest son.
