GEDCOM reading is wrong - too many unknowns

I took a lot at your raw GEDCOM file.

Here's an example of a name that couldn't be interpreted:

George /(Blockner)Balazs)/

As you will have noticed, it's not getting a last name, so the imported person would be "George Unknown" and the text in the surname field would be printed in the biography for you to interpret and correct. 

One of the benefits of GEDMatches is that it shows you this sort of thing before the file is imported. You can either skip that person, or if like you say, there are too many, not import your file at all.

As it appears under my list of ancestors - ALL of my gedcom entries are unknown, as there is not a single name to be found. So I must have been entering the data wrongly. There is a long learning curve ahead of me.

How is it that my gedcom file fills in the tree in most genealogy programs eg FTW??

Hi Michael,

We may be talking about different things. Your GEDCOM hasn't been imported yet. It's only gone through GEDMatches, the first step in an import.

Michael:

Many GEDCOM uploads (most, in fact) contain errors of omission, repetition, and "UNKNOWNS".  For this reason it is extremely important that those files be EDITED for accuracy both BEFORE and AFTER uploading to WikiTree!!
