Need help on wife of Richard Bass 1707-1780

Have recently started trying to untangle part of the Bass family. At this time, three profiles are attached to Richard Bass as wife. This resulted from previous merges of Richard's duplicates. The only evidence I have found for the identity of Richard's wife is the fact that he names her in his will as "dear and beloved wife Elizabeth..."

One of the profiles currently attached is Elizabeth Unknown; the other two are Elizabeth Smith with differing birth and death dates. No documentation has been found for Richard's marriage and I do not know where the Smith came from.

I have set the three profiles as Unmerged Matches pending further information. If anyone knows anything about Richard and/or his wife, would appreciate the help.

That looks like marriage info from ancestry.com? Not sure it's reliable.
Yep. Always double check your sources.

Hi Shirley,

Please look at Smith-129994. Elizabeth was my 5th gg grandmother. The profile is sourced, hope this helps.

Mormon church records are not documentation. Nor should be considered one.

Mormons rush to tabernacle to baptize their long dead ancestors, or who they believe are their ancestors, and the trees created are spurious. Too often there are conflicted lineages for the same person.

I know, I have checked out many.

Hi Shirley: The Bass family appears to be a matter of fiction, wishful thinking, and some facts scattered in.

DNA hasn't cleared the issue either. For instance given that the DNA of John Basse was R1b1, question is which flavor of that haplogroup there is the largely Scottish  R-L21 and the largely Frisian R-L47 both of which have been found in Bass descendants. Some maintain that R-L21 can't be John Basse, because it is Scottish, but forget that the Roman Governor Agricola, and others who warred with the Scots, hauled by many in chains to London.

It is a quandry, and compounded by the fact that precious records that could clear up the question are lost forever. For instance:

NDEXhttp://www.usgennet.org/usa/nc/county/wayne/granteebooks/bk2.htm#N_1_BOOK 2 - April 1750 - April 1754Johnston County was formed from the western part ofCraven County in 1746 and in 1758, Dobbs County was formed from the eastern portion of Johnston; however, the records of Johnston went with the newly formed Dobbs. In 1779 Wayne County was formed fromthe western portion of Dobbs and in 1791, most of the remainder of Dobbs was divided into Glasgow - now Greene - and Lenoir Counties, and Dobbs ceased to exist. The records of early Johnston (and otherCounties formed from Johnston), Wayne, Greene, and Lenoir Counties were placed at the Courthouse in Lenoir County. In 1878, a Courthouse fire in Kinston destroyed almost all these records except theoriginal Grantee Index. Greene County also suffered a destruction of its records in a similar fire. According to Charles Holloman, a Grantor Index was prepared from the Grantee Index and both thosebooks were saved during another Courthouse fire in 1880.Transcribed from the Grantor Index and checked against the Grantee Indexby Martha Mewborn Marble, 1377 Independence Ave., S. Dear William,

Your answer seems very complicated to my old brain thou I do believe your comments to be true as you have obviously have done some homework. Am I then to believe that my line of descendency from Capt. William Basse to be incorrect? No Scot blood there, far as I know all English. My own Scot heritage comes from my maternal grandfather. Further, is there real proof of Capt. William Basse and his son John who was raised by Nansemond Indians & married my grandmother Elizabeth Keziah Parker? The history books certainly are telling lies if that info is false.

William,

P.S. I am so forgetful please forgive me. FYI just wanted you to know I concur with your statements about the Mormon's and the why and how they do ancestry. I have never met or heard of a Mormon in my family.

All the Best,

Charles
