I'm ready to upload gedcom(s); how many of my 30K+ people should I upload at once?

I would try to add a few profiles manually first to get the feel of WikiTree procedures before uploading the Gedcom.

Thank you Kevin. I sure like the idea of collaborating on a worldwide tree. But I've been reading other Q&As about this, and it's beginning to sound like a lot of work.

You will need to upgrade your account to add profiles - still free! You should also limit your first gedcom upload to around 100 people to get the feel of the process. Some people, such as myself, find it easier to add the profiles individually or manually.

It depends on what your goal is Doug. It's more work than clicking a button to accept a hint for sure. But the benefit of an accurate, free family tree available for the future makes it worth it.
Thanks again Lucy. I'm a slow worker with too many family tree goals. I'll have to put WT on the back burner for now.

Hi Doug,

The gedcom process can be time consuming. Definitely try out manually adding profiles first then if you want, try out a small gedcom file. If you do, there's an app to help with formatting the biographies. It's AGC and can be found on the app list under the Find drop down menu.

Another thing to keep in mind, as you add profiles you will bump into profiles already created. Then you can connect to those and add additional info and start collaborating with other members.

Come back here to the forum if you have any further questions.

It will take a long time to upload your tree because there is little that is automatic. There will likely be a number of people in your tree that already exist on the global tree.

As stated, upload branches of your tree that only have about a 100 persons or the process will get overwhelming.

You first need to match or reject every suggestion in the GEDCompare report, then add all the new people, then go through the list again to ensure all the relationships are connected.

You will find some branches that you did not have.

Hello, Doug, and welcome to Wikitree. Uploading 30,000 relatives sounds like a daunting project, and most people will tell you to start with yourself and gradually work from there. However, I started the other way, by looking for any of my ancestors who were already here. In a few hours, I had found a 3-great-grandfather and several other people back a few generations, so I really needed to add a hundred or so names. Wikitree shows 563 people named McQuinn. Some of them may be yours. You can also search for people who lived in the same town, fought in the same battle, etc. Have fun.

Thanks Joyce,

I do see some ancestors already in WT. I'll start there, by linking to them, a few at a time.
