Immigrant sticker enhancement [closed]

I have several hundred immigrant ancestors and I would like to be able to generate a report that includes the arrival year.  Could the Immigrant sticker template be enhanced to include an arrival year?  The wonderful Ancestor Explorer app might then be enhanced to report immigrants based on this sticker.  It currently has an immigrant report, but it is dependent on origin and destination locations, which are based on birth and death locations and so may not reflect immigrant status.  Also, there seems to be no data field in WT where an arrival date or year can be entered and thus included in a report.  Thanks,

Gregg

could you give the specific name of the sticker you are thinking of - or the URL for its template page? We don't have an "Immigrant Sticker" - see https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Automated:Template_Sticker - or are you proposing that we have one?

Liz - I would guess it's the migrating ancestor template.

You are correct, that is the template that I had in mind.

You can include a date in the text (see the Migrating Ancestor template's [parameter usage]), and many have, but it's not a separate parameter. So it's not something that could be pulled into a report, nor would we want to add it as a required parameter.

Years ago there was a proposal for an immigrant sticker that would have the year and add the ship category, but one was never created because of the chaos of the ship categories at the time (still a bit chaotic & not a category you'd want auto-generated by a sticker).

Perhaps a sticker whose main purpose is to inform the Ancestor Explorer app with date of immigration would satisfy both your request and that earlier one (and another one I'd had a couple of years ago). It would need to be flexible as to image, as the Migrating Ancestor template is, rather than use a ship image (as suggested by the earlier request), since not all immigrants crossed an ocean, and if they did, not all did so on a sailing ship or arrived aboard a steamer at Ellis Island.

IF (big if) the Ancestor Explorer app could be rewritten to include the year from a sticker if the sticker was used on a profile the app was collecting info from - a question for the app's creator, Chase* - then we could propose a new sticker that could be used to provide the year. I've done one up in a sandbox page - see https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Template:Sandbox_Liz6/docs

Cheers, Liz

* From the Ancestor Explorer app page: If you have any questions, comments, suggestions or problems, please post a comment on Chase Ashley's WikiTree page.

I had not realized that Ancestor Explorer was using stickers and categories only as filters, and was not reading their data content.  It seems a bit much to ask Chase to extend the app to look inside stickers only for the purpose of tracking arrival dates, so I respectfully withdraw my suggestion.  I do think that some way of entering reportable immigration data of origin, destination, and arrival year would be a useful enhancement to WT.   Thanks, Gregg

In theory, I could add that capability to Ancestor Explorer. The app would first find all ancestors whose profiles have the sticker, then "read" the bios of those profiles to get the date of immigration from the sticker template, and then generate the list. All lists of ancestors currently generated by Ancestor Explorer have columns for name, date of birth, place of birth, date of death, place of death, with an optional ahnentafel/generation column. So generating a list that has a column for date of immigration would be different from all current Ancestor Explorer lists. I am not necessarily opposed to that, however. Bit of a chicken/egg problem - I'm not sure I want to do the work of adding the feature unless a lot of immigrant profiles use the sticker with the date.

Thanks Chase! I'll close this question, since Gregg withdrew his request (and no profile is currently displaying a sticker with year= [immigration year], although a lot include the year as free text in one of the existing parameters for the Migrating Ancestor sticker).

Cheers, Liz
