2022 December Connectors' Monthly Challenge

Hi Connectors! The December Connectors Challenge is up and running. :D

This is a monthly challenge and open to everyone. The goal is to connect parents, create profiles or propose merges, etc. to connect unconnected branches to the main tree. Scoring is of branches connected to the tree, not individual profiles. So whether a branch consists of two people or ninety-two people, it still counts as ONE connection. Unlike the Connect-a-Thon, only actual connections made are counted, not the number of profiles created to get to a connection.

The Connector’s Challenge Rules:

 1. Pick an existing profile (created before this month’s challenge began) that is not currently connected to the Global Family Tree. (Hint: If you are a member of the Connectors Project, you’ll see a yellow puzzle piece icon next to that person’s name at the top of their profile if they aren’t connected.)

2. Add a profile for any first degree relative for that profile (a parent, spouse, child, or sibling). Continue adding first degree relatives until you run into a profile that is already connected to the Global Family Tree that you can attach to. Remember to use good sources to support the creation or connection of every profile you make! Please be aware that it takes 24 hours for the tree to update and show the connection.

3. ANSWER this post. This lets us know that you’re participating in this month’s challenge. It’s easiest for us to track your trail if you post it here, but you can also use the Challenge Tracker. Just be sure you comment “Connected to Smith-000” when you make the connection to the already existing, already connected profile. Replace Smith-000 with the actual profile ID of the starting profile you were trying to connect. And there can be only ONE connection per branch!

4. Remember the tally is not of profiles created (like the Connect-a-Thon) but of actual connections made to the Global Family Tree. You might connect a whole branch of profiles and make 100 new profiles in the process of making a connection, but the connection only counts as 1.

5. If you enjoy challenges, keep in mind that adding good sources to any existing profiles you run into while connecting or fixing errors on those existing profiles might count towards the Sourcerers or Data Doctors Challenges.

6. Let us know if you’d like a Connector’s Badge for participating. That will also make you a part of our project and we’d love to have you! Stats are kept and updated on the Connectors Challenge page. The link to the tracker will follow.

How long does it usually take for connected profiles to appear in the Tracker's list?

Also, have N Gauthier's observations and concerns (see below, almost at bottom of comments) been taken into account and addressed?

I'm in this month again :) Here are my first two connections:

Unconnected Cyrus C. Carpenter got his father Asahel, whose father John is already connected.

Unconnected John Henry Gear got his father Ezekiel Gilbert Gear, whose father Hezekiah Gear is already connected.

by Jelena Eckstädt G2G Astronaut (1.5m points)

Unconnected Hugh Johnston Anderson found his connected son John Francis.

Unconnected Julius L Meier got his namesake son. Junior got his wife Elizabeth, who is extraordinary herself. Elizabeth got her father, whose father is connected

In Elizabeth's obituary, which is cited on FG, is mentioned her maternal granddad, who, in a different branch, was also unconnected. I connected him with Elizabeth via the daughter/mother.

Unconnected Thomas Joshua Conrad found his connected father.

Unconnected John Renn got his connected wife.

Inez Owens is unconnected. I created her husband and his sister. Mary's husband got his father and his grandfather, who I could connect with his father, who is connected to the Big Tree

Christian Siegel is unconnected. I created his daughter and her husband, who got connected to his father who is already a part of the Big Tree

Unconnected Robert Sterling found his connected father.

Unconnected Gus Dell got his wife Lena Price, who got her previous husband, whose father Thomas Billingsley is connected.

Unlinked John Treadway Rich got his wifeLucretia (Winship) Rich, her father and her grandfather, who was connected to his father Richard, who got already connected

Fred Warren Green (unconnected) finds his connected father

Unconnected Charles Arthur Lexow got his wife, whose father is already connected.

I'd like to try this month. I adopted a lovely profile that was unconnected a while ago and added 17 profiles but kept hitting dead ends. Time for another go I think.

unconnected Mary Denholm Baxter to connected parent George Denholm

unconnected William Duncan Baxter is now connected to his connected great great grandfather Charles Ross . I did have to make a lot of profiles but they were a pretty interesting family and I might keep them on my watchlist and improve the bios and add in some of the interesting finds, time permitting.

unconnected Robert Baxter to connected son Andrew Baxter

unconnected Isabella Gilchrist  to her connected grandmother Mary Paton Gilchrist. I accidentally added Isabella to my own Gilchrist line when I copied info from the wrong census return into my tree. I've felt a bit bad about disconnecting her and leaving her as an unknown unknown. Built out a lot of her tree in the last couple of days to find a connection. So super happy to get her connected to the big tree.

unconnected Mary Blackadder Gilchrist  to connected brother William Blackadder. after creating profile for their mother. I haven't created a father profile as all I know about him is his name is John.

unconnected Dorothy Sneddon Maxwell connected to her connected great great grandparents John Sneddon and Euphemia Grant Sneddon  after making profiles for her father grandfather and great grandfather.

I am a DNA match for one of Dorothy Sneddon's descendants on ancestry and thought if I built her paternal line it would connect to my Sneddon family but its a different family. We must be connected another way!

unconnected Elspet Low was connected only to her three Baxter daughters with no husband. I think she had previously been connected to the wrong husband and disconnected. She is now connected to Jane Donaldson Baxter after I created profiles for her husband his parents, Jane's husband and his parents and I think some other people too.

Jane is in my family tree. She is my first cousin 4 times removed. I really didn't expect this family to connect to me at all so that was a nice surprise.

unconnected Marion Sneddon to connected mother Isabella Danks

unconnected Jane Westwood Jarvie to connected father Thomas Westwood

unconnected Elizabeth Gilchrist  to connected grandfather Matthew Gilchrist  after creating a profile for her father John.

I am going to try this out! Yesterday I was looking at some of my family surnames (the less common names) and wondering if I could connect some people. I did it before without adding sources (I know - YIKES!), so this would be a better challenge for me haha

I'll give a go. I checked my Watchlist for unconnected profiles and have several. I'll start with Ernest Victor Martin - https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Martin-24007

Cheers, Liz
by Liz Shifflett G2G6 Pilot (633k points)
Is someone connected if it's through marriage not blood? I made a connection for Ernest that gets him connected to the big tree - through me, and he's twice removed by marriage (my late husband's ex-father-in-law). But when I checked my watchlist for unconnected profiles, he's no longer being listed as one. That's not right, is it?

The current standings at ...
https://wikitree.sdms.si/Challenges/ConnectorsChallenge/User.htm

show that the current leader has 29 entries ...
but unfortunately none of them count, because they were ALL profiles that were created on 01 Dec 2022 as shown at ...
https://wikitree.sdms.si/function/WTTrackerReview/profiles.htm?Challenge=ConnectorsChallenge20221201&WikiTreeID=Reid-4316

The Connectors challenge is only for linking up OLD profiles created BEFORE the current month.

I hope the Connectors admin will let them know about this mistake of clicking on the Connectors Challenge when creating NEW profiles. Thanks
by N Gauthier G2G6 Pilot (294k points)
was there ever any followup done for this ?

I notice that some are still making claims for connections on NEW unqualified profiles. What is the point of this challenge if participating members are breaking the rules ? This has been an ongoing problem ... so perhaps this challenge should be eliminated in the future ???

My challenge is to connect Johann Adam Fey Sr. (Fey-489, created by my distant cousin Steven Greenwood who found him at his 3rd great grandparents' cemetery in Wisconsin) to an already connected profile which is also in OFB Hickengrund (a German family book in the valley I'm currently living in), for example Anna Elisabetha Stahl (Stahl-770, whose profile was created in 2016).
I believe I just managed to connect Johann Adam Fey Sr. and his so far unconnected relatives to the worldwide tree through Johannche Georg's son Georg who is connected to the previously connected Anna Elisabetha Strauss via Johann Henrich Höchst.
I understand this counts as one connection made, even though it connects 58 previously unconnected profiles, all the way from Fey-489 to Fey-514 and accompanying spouses and a few sidelines.
I've now also found the connection to previously unconnected Petri-766 (and her 100+ unconnected relatives' profiles) via brothers Johannes Fuchs-2220 and Johann Adam Fuchs-2225.

I am currently working on my Ancestral line SWART and created the "Familie Bond Swart Project and want to add all the descendants Of the Progenitor Jan Johannis Swart under this project which means I create a lot of new profiles that i connect to the Ancestral line.

I have created over 300 profiles this month and sourced +/-90% of these profiles from valid sources. the other is created through family trees on various platforms. which I believe is legit and only short sources.

Does these connections I make Count onder the connectors challenge. Every profile i create is directly attached to the global Family tree.

Please assist

I these counts please add me on the December challenge
