Can I do a DNA Confirmation for anyone else but my own profile?

I would like to do DNA Confirmations for family members and other people I've encouraged to join WikiTree. I seem to only be able to use the tools for my own profile. Is there a way someone at WikiTree can give me permission to use the app for them and paste all the DNA Confirmation statements on the right profiles?

So, i'm not expert by any means, but I think you can add DNA confirmation statements for profiles you mange, and even ones that are open.
There is a g2g discussing a tool you can us to build DNA confirmation statements.  I think it will then give you statements for those you set it up as the match, etc.

Thanks, I tried that out, and was able to put two kit numbers in. The only problem was that the result did not make sense. I will start a new G2G question about that problem.

Hi Terri,

The DNA Confirmation help pages are the instructions for DNA confirmation on WIkiTree. As you may know, a profile should not be marked "confirmed with DNA" without genealogical source citations, since the purpose of DNA confirmation is to confirm a documented genealogical relationship (maternal and/or paternal). DNA confirmation does not stand alone.

I strongly recommend the DNA Confirmation Citation Maker aid for creating and/or validating DNA confirmation source citations.

I tried the DNA Confirmation Citation Maker and it did not work for two 14th cousins, but I was able to use the example template to create the DNA Confirmation Citation and add it to the profiles that were post 1500. Since I don't have the pre-1500 Certification, I was unable to add it to their most recent common ancestor.
The Relationship Finder shows some missing DNA confirmations for the intermediate ancestors between the testers,

DNA confirmation is not proof of a parental relationship but confirmation of a genealogically established relationship. Make sure all the intermediate paternal relationships have good primary sources and are also DNA confirmed.
What is considered Genealogical source citation?  I have DNA matches on ancestry.com. By comparing our shared matches and documentations, I know how they connect to me.  But I do not understand the rules on wikitree.  They are very confusing to me.

Heather check these links:

I checked out your profile. I saw your DNA section about your DNA matches. I am working on putting those on my profile...for my millington matches through my mom.

Does putting those citations (like you have) allow me to mark my 3rd great grandfather as DNA confirmed?

Heather, I strongly recommend using the DNA Confirmation Citation Maker app for making your source citations. It does a great job and is pretty easy to use.

what if ancestry's dna predictions are not accurate...and you are actually closer then the prediction....
Just enter Ancestry's prediction when the DNA confirmation app asks.
The app doesnt work for triangulation when your test is with ancestry.  Ancestry isnt listed as one of the test options in the drop down.

That's right. Ancestry doesn't provide enough information to do triangulations. If you can upload the Ancestry data to GEDmatch, however, you can then use GEDmatch to accomplish the task.

I did that yesterday!  and uploaded my Ancestry tree..cause ancestry lets you download it as a ged file.

Now I have to figure out how to navigate ged.match too

Terri, you may be running into WikiTree's privacy restrictions combined with the way WikiTree uses entries of DNA test information on profiles.

  • DNA test information can only be entered on the profile of a living person by that person.  If that person is not a WikiTree member then their DNA test information cannot be entered.
  • DNA test information for non-living persons can only be entered by someone on the trusted list.
  • When DNA test information is on a profile then WikiTree propagates it to all profiles of that person's ancestors, based on their connections to the profile of the tested person.
I believe your question is only about writing the confirmation paragraphs on profiles that already have indications of DNA relationships.  In that case, if the profile is private then you have to be on the trusted list in order to edit it.  You did make a comment, though, implying that you are not able to enter kit numbers on some profiles.  If this is the case then the restrictions on who can enter DNA information for what profiles is most likely the cause of your problem.

Thanks! I appreciate your information on being able to enter DNA test information on a non-living person if you are on the trusted list for the profile. But if the person is non-living then they would not be able to respond to a request to be on the trusted list, wouldn't they? Or are non-living profiles taken over by WikiTree experts once the person dies?
You can only contact members.  All profiles of non-members, whether living or not, have profile managers that can be contacted for things like trusted list requests or are what we call "orphaned" profiles (ones that do not have a manager).  In those cases, any member can "adopt" the profile, becoming its manager, and then controls its trusted list.  When a member dies, profiles of living persons that he/she managed are deleted unless a living member has been designated to manage the profile.
