Erford was born Jun 1885 in NY to James W. and Helen E. Wood

You seem to have furnished a fair amount of information, but I have not found an indication of the parents name.

In the 1880 Census - James W Wood listed as married, father Elijah Wood listed as widowed and brothers are either single or widowed, Helen as listed as 'wife'.  I think she is the spouse of James, not Elijah as noted.

Also the name spellings are off - probably transcription errors - James appears to be Ursley in an earlier census.
