Free Space Link - Reference Internl title?

I think I know the answer but I gotta ask....

I have a FreSpace profile that lists census sources by year and family member, e.g.

* 1850 US Census
** John Doe

Is it possible fo reference that with something like:

US Census/name ? My suspicion is, no, you can't do that, oh, no you can't do that.oh well:(

You need to use the pipe character | not the slash / .

Post back if you still have trouble with the coding.

Lindy,

I don't think I was clear. I don't just want the reference to have the name of the entry. I want the link IN the free space profile to actually open! A link to a link that when selected opens the indirect link. In 'C' terms a **var; don't remember syntax of other languages, but most modern languages can do it.

The whole point of the fre space profile is to have sources usable across multiple profiles.

See https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Help:Adding_Links#Links_to_Free-Space_Profiles

Thanks!

I see what you mean now, Jerry.

Hope I didn't confuse you too much! laugh

Hi Jerry. I think it may help to use headers with equal signs. I took the liberty of editing the page to use one on the first section. (Please revert if you don't like it.)

Now this link should work:

1850 Census

You can try it with this:

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:EJMorehouse_Census_Links#1850_Federal_Census

It jumps down to the desired section.

Jim,

I was just there, reversed your change 'cause I thought I made it in error

I'll go back and fix, check it out

Thanks

Great Jerry! It looks as if it is going to work.

The formatting will be improved if you use only one asterisk instead of two for the bullet points.

Jim,

Yes, using one asterisk improved the formatting; yes, it works - sort of. I was hoping to actually 'opening' the link in the free-space profile, as noted above.

Now for the educational part.... You suggested:

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:EJMorehouse_Census_Links#1850_Federal_Census

I found: 1850 Federal Census worked as well. In fact, adding a person's name, e.g. 1850 Federal Census|Charles Hill Morehouse  was more informative to user and did not adversely affect usage.

So, enlighten me, please. Is one syntax 'better' than the other? If so, why? I see this as an educational opportunity.

Hi again Jerry.

The link starting with https I gave is to test the concept from G2G. It is not intended to be used within a profile.

I am assuming that what you desire is a link which will open the free-space page then jump down to the particular subheading. Is that correct?

I tried each of the following on a profile:

 1. 1850 Federal Census
 2. 1850 Federal Census
 3. 1850 Federal Census|Charles Hill Morehouse

Of those, all open the space page, but only the first one makes the browser jump down to the subheading "1850 Federal Census". So I think format number 1 is the one you should use. The # is important as that is what causes the jump.

For clarity, to differentiate the two mentions of "1850 Federal Census" in number 1, consider

XYZ

That would create a link which appears as XYZ in the referring profile, and when clicked jumps to subheading ABC on the free-space page.

Jim,

Thank you, again!

I had tried all of your options and chose to use #3 after what I thought were successful tests of all three. Ah, well, thought is key word. I retested today and decided your #1 gave me the closest to what I wanted when viewed from the jump-page. I decided to simply put the individual's name after the pipe. I'm considering amending that to "yyyy Census Record for <name>" for better presentation to the viewer.

Thanks, again!

Addendum: I've also added a "===Usage ===" heading and text to help those (including me) who might want to use the free-space profile in the future.
