is there a way to change a redirect?

Is there a way to edit the redirect of a merged profile so that it goes to a newly found lowest number? Or will that cause more problems than the bouncing back and forth caused by multiple redirects?

I ask because I'm discovering that I'm not real good at coming up with the correct lowest number (and it seems to take me forever to come up with what turns out to be wrong too... I'm getting a little frustrated with myself).  I also find that I forget to check the old proposed merges to make sure they're going to the lowest-numbered ID before trying to see why they're still not merged.

If fixing my mistakes of not merging into the lowest-numbered ID to begin with isn't a good option, is WikiTree better with the merged profiles, even if they have to redirect a few times, or should I quit with the merge suggestions and leave it to folks better at finding the lowest-number ID than I am?

Thanks,
Liz

Hi Liz. I'm sorry that I didn't see this question before. I just noticed it after Abby answered. Abby is exactly right. Don't get discouraged about merging! It's so important and your help is very valuable. It's OK to make mistakes. A few are no big deal. It's only when there are long chains of merges that they really become a problem. Thank you!

No, Liz, you cannot change the redirect, but ultimately having one profile is the most important goal. I had the same thing happen a couple times. Continue to try to find the lowest profile number first, but if something slips past you, adding one more redirect is not as big an inconvenience as multiple profiles or the strings of redirects happening with some of the merging going on awhile ago.

One thing I do is match the profiles first, so they are still linked, then go through and initiate merges once I am able to finally find the lowest number. It is an extra step, but it has saved me more than once when I was sure I had found the magic number but was wrong.

Keep up the good work!
