DNA Tests

AncestryDNA: DNA test from AncestryDNA.

After filling in my info for Ancestry.com user name, GEDmatch ID, yourDNAportal.com, I receive a message, over a large empty rectangular box, "The Ancestry ID may only contain letters, digits, periods, and underscores."

I tried my Ancestry user name but this does not work, neither does my sign-in email, etc.

Thank you. No photo description available.

I've fixed it. There is a login choice on Amazon whether to use your user name, or Email address. I had been using my Email.  Without changing anything else, I logged in with my user name, and when I entered the required three fields on WikiTree, it worked and connected them together.   Thanks to everybody who has reponded!  If anybody else has this problem, I hope that they see this thread.

It's however you sign into Ancestry.  I doubt you sign in as Bill Smith.  It's more probably smithw203 or krakenwakes or something.

I sign in with my email, every time.  This did not work, either, on the Wikitree form.
Update: I signed out of Ancestry, and signed back in using my User Name, rather than my email address, either of which will work. When I entered the required three fields on WikiTree's DNA page, to link with Amazon ad the other partners, it worked.  Thanks for your responses!

This should work.  On Ancestry

Do a search for Changing Your Ancestry Username.

You can also go to Ancestry Account Settings.  Also, your Ancestry User Name should be in the upper right-hand corner of your Ancestry Home Page in the black box at the top.

Thank you but it is not the Ancestry User name, which is Bill J Smith, that they are asking for, it is something called "Ancestry ID", which I have never heard of. Thanks
Give Ancestry a phone call.  They can answer your question.
The Ancestry phone number is 800-615-6560
Thanks, I'll give this a few hours more and try the phone number.  I pay enough to that company every year, that they should be able to answer one nagging question, lol.
I think the WikiTree DNA page is out of date, and it is the username you should enter. You can find it on: https://www.ancestry.com/account
Hi, thanks, I am aware of that page. They are asking for something spefically called "Ancestry ID", not a user name. I have tried everything including my email, GEDmatch kit number, my name on Ancestry Bill J. Smith , user name on Ancestry Bill J Smith (without a period after J), but nothing has worked.
I was able to complete those forms on WikiTree for three other kits that i have on GEDmatch, which are FTDNA, 23andme and MyHeritage. None of them asked for a "ID" and unfortunately, Ancestry is the kit that I selected on WikiTree to use on MyDNAPortal, connected to my DNA kit on GEDmatch.
I think it's the WikiTree page that is wrong and where it asks for your Ancestry ID it should really say 'Ancestry username', though maybe someone else can confirm this.

The name I've entered on for my own Ancestry DNA is what is labelled as my 'username' on my Ancestry account settings page (which is different from my 'Name' and the email address I use to log in).

I have tried them, they do not work. The box has william smith filled in, when it is opened.  I did not enter this myself.   This is not a user name, or the "Ancestry ID" they refer to, and it does not work. When I fill in the boxes below the top (empby) box, william smith dissapears.  Nothing that I have tried filling in has worked nor has leaving it blank. None of the other three DNA companies listed for me, have asked for an "ID". No photo description available.

Some systems will lock you out if you try to get in more than a few times.

If that's the case here, you will need someone within their Customer Service section to help and get you unlocked.

I agree with Katie that it's a badly worded error message and "Ancestry ID" actually means "Ancestry username", which on WikiTree isn't allowed to contain any spaces (even if Ancestry allows them). My "Ancestry.com user name" is currently entered on WikiTree as "PaulMasini" with no spaces, which works fine. If I try to change it to "Paul Masini" with a space in it then I get the same message about the "Ancestry ID".

Bill - in the box labelled "Ancestry.com user name" try entering either "WilliamSmith" or "BillJSmith", whichever is closest to your actual Ancestry username but without any spaces in it.

Probem fixed. I logged out of Ancestry and logged in with my user name Bill J Smith rather than my usual email address. When I went back to the WikiTree page, it connected to GEDmatch, Amazon and YourDNAPortal.

This is from the Help page:
"When you enter or edit an AncestryDNA test on your WikiTree DNA Tests Page, the optional field for AncestryDNA user ID will appear.

This is your AncestryDNA member name. It can be a combination of letters, numbers, and underscores. For example: ciwhitten, Joe_Schmoe2013.

To locate you AncestryDNA on AncestryDNA, log in to your AncestryDNA account. and click on your name (top right). In the drop-down, click on "Your Account", click on "Update Username and Preferences". Your user name will be in the top box on the left under, "User Name"."
