Scotland Peoples Vital Events, when it says NRH instead of a place name is it a dead end for me to look at online?

I am working on filling in some data for the 80, 000 entries I have for my One-Name Study. Over the years I have bought a lot of records from Scotland's People and I appreciate that I can always look back at those documents. I have a question about indexed information saying NRH (New Register House) instead of a place name for an individual record. In what circumstances would NRH be used? Is there any way to see the details from here in Canada?

Pam, could you give an example of such a record that we can study?

There may be relevant information at this page, but I don't know if it is up to date.

Hi Jim,

His marriage isn't available to buy yet:

Springburn

Dudley is a pretty rare first name but I can't seem to figure out who his parents are.

The two records at the top should only have been listed in the bottom section of my reply. Sorry to be confusing!
Thanks Jim, Unfortunately, I can't spend 12 pounds for one record so I am trying a work around and have found lots of information in the indices. This one doesn't give me a place for his birth and I wonder why a record would be listed as NRH. In other words, why would it be used? It's kind of like the Overseas Records or the Service Records.

For other researchers, I have been able to get quite a bit of information, just using the index. The death gives an age, a place & date and usually a mother's name. It gets tough with women's deaths because the last name used may be a maiden name or a surname from a marriage or two. So now I know that I can go back to the death search and enter the date, place and mother's maiden name and you may find other records using different last names. This gives you some names to research in the marriage and birth index using the additional names you found on the death index along with the mother's maiden name. It takes time but it's basically a free search.

Thanks again for the input!

You're welcome, Pam.

You can contact Scotland's People using this form. It seems to be both for technical issues and help in understanding records. Perhaps they would answer your question about "NRH" if you mention the Dudley Fairweather birth record.

Pam, add Scotland as a tag, but I will send this along to the Leaders, also.
Death records will normally have multiple entries for married women. Once with maiden name, again with married name, so if you search, you should find the same 'ref' for both entries.  If they were married more than once, you would get additional, but the Ref numbers should be the same.

If they were born before 1855, the records are in the Old Parish Registers, 'sometimes', and those frequently have the parents info with the baptismal records.  Statutory registers, which are after 1855, we no longer have that info, other than sometimes the mother's maiden name is included.

The marriage of Dudley Fairweather to Jessie Irving shows that she was probably married 1st to someone else since she has 2 spouse surnames in the entry with Dudley. Those entries are showing the District Name.  Looking at the marriage info for Jessie, it shows 3 entries.  Maiden name was Edwards, married Russell 1954, Fairweather 1963 and Fraser in 1978

Dudley has a Find a Grave 155191431 stating he was born 13 May 1926 and died 5 Apr 2013, buried in Baldernock Churchyard in Baldernock, East Dunbrtonshire with gravestone picture

I found an Ancestry Tree that has a wife Isabel Glencross Hiddletston 1928-2015, whom he married abt 1991

Thanks Linda. I had missed the name Fraser in his first wife Jessie's entries for their marriage. Thanks also for the Find a Grave entry. I do have his obituary which mentions his wife Isabel and his daughter Lorna.

FAIRWEATHER  LORNA ANNE F 1964 387 / 378 PERTH

There's one closed tree on ancestry and I've just written to the person who has that tree.

Thanks also to Bobbie & Jim!

I will send a question to Scotland's People to ask about the NRH designation.

Thank you for the examples, Pam. The one I looked at was this:

<ref>[https://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/search-our-records Scotland's People] Statutory registers - Births. Surname: FAIRWEATHER. Forename: DUDLEY. Mothers Maiden Name: . Gender: M. Year: 1926. Ref: 006 / AR / 79. RD name: NRH. Accessed 5 February 2023.</ref>

I then looked at this help page.

It says in effect that birth records are not available online until 1 January of the first year more than 100 years later, in the case 1 January 2027. Then it says

If you require an official copy of a birth entry less than 100 years old, marriage entry less than 75 years old or death entry less than 50 years, go to certificate search. Further information is provided in certificates and copies.

But that certificate search link just leads back to the online search you've already used.

Instead, you can apply in writing. See this link.

There is a downloadable PDF application form at this link.

From the information page, it looks as if it will cost £12. Credit cards are accepted.

Regarding the one listed with this data: FAIRWEATHER. DUDLEY M 1926 006 / AR / 79 NRH ... the research guide (linked here) on indexes suggests that "AR" is an Adoption Record, and the designation in the Registration District is NRH because of an adoption. I suspect that the record will not be available to purchase, but digging further in their research guide may tell you.
