G2G: can we get migration sticker in French please? Proposal

Currently, the sticker one uses to illustrate a migrating ancestor is only in English, which looks a bit weird in a bio that is in another language.  Can we get this sticker to have translation options please?

Yay, Danielle for proposing this great idea for improvement!

It took less than 2 hours to get the sticker officially approved!

hi Gaile, any progress on this?  If you need my help on French, let me know.

Danielle, I'm the wrong person to ask.  The only people who can do that are members of the Templates Project.  It seems like someone should have seen this post and, when it got the 3 required favorable answers, made the sticker.

oh, sorry, I thought you were among them.

Aleš is a leader of the Templates Project. Maybe add the tag ales .

Hi! Aleš has given me permission to update the Migrating Ancestor sticker with a lang=fr option. I just need y'all to tell me what the French would be.

hello Liz,

To keep it simple, since right now it mainly gets applied to French immigrants to New France (at least for me), the text would read:

... a migré de France au Canada, Nouvelle-France

and thank you very much for doing this.  broken heart

Thanks Danielle - I had come up with an alternative solution, to have "from" and "to" be included as user input (part of origin= and destination= ) instead of "hardwired" text.

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Template:Sandbox_Liz3/docs

Editing it to have "... ... ... a migré" (... ... ... being the full name, pulled from the profile's namefields) would just take a sec. Let me know if you'd prefer the name to be included or just "Migré" & I can update the Migrating Ancestor sticker accordingly.

Cheers, Liz

Flag of de France
Migré de France au Canada, Nouvelle-France.
Flag of au Canada, Nouvelle-France

or...

Flag of de France
Liz (Noland) Shifflett a migré de France au Canada, Nouvelle-France.
Flag of au Canada, Nouvelle-France

the second one please, of course the second flag is wrong, but that's a relatively easy fix. Flags-12.png for destination for these particular migrants.

original English sticker is like this:

{{Migrating Ancestor

 | origin = France

 | destination = New France

 | origin-flag = Flags.png

 | destination-flag = Flags-12.png

 }}

Which gives Flag ''(name) migrated from France to New France'' Flag

So just giving the |lang=fr option in there somewhere was what I though you could do, to the basic format wouldn't change.  But I'm no expert on these babies, so whatever works.

ok... if the French is correct in the following, I can transfer the coding from https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Template:Sandbox_Liz3 to https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Template:Migrating Ancestor

{{Migrating Ancestor [but currently in a sandbox]
|lang=fr
|origin=de France
|origin-flag= Flags.png
}}
Flag of de France
... ... ... a migré de France vers un lieu inconnu.
Flag of an unknown location
{{Migrating Ancestor [but currently in a sandbox]
|lang=fr
|destination= au Canada
|destination-flag= Flags-1.png
}}
Flag of an unknown location
... ... ... a migré d'un endroit inconnu au Canada.
Flag of au Canada
{{Migrating Ancestor [but currently in a sandbox]
|lang=fr
|origin= de France
|destination= au Canada, Nouvelle-France
|origin-flag= WikiTree_practice-4.png
|destination-flag= Flags-12.png
}}
Flag of de France
... ... ... a migré de France au Canada, Nouvelle-France.
Flag of au Canada, Nouvelle-France
{{Migrating Ancestor [but currently in a sandbox]
|lang=fr
|origin= d'Allemagne
|destination= en Martinique
|origin-flag= Flags.gif
|destination-flag= French_Flags-65.png
}}
Flag of d'Allemagne
... ... ... a migré d'Allemagne en Martinique.
Flag of en Martinique

In case you were interested - coding for the template update:

<includeonly>{{Sticker
|image={{{origin-flag|Flags-23.jpg}}}
|imagetext=Flag of {{{origin|an unknown location}}}
|image1={{{destination-flag|Flags-23.jpg}}}
|image1text=Flag of {{{destination|an unknown location}}}
|text={{#switch:{{{lang|}}}
|fr= {{Name}} a migré {{{origin|d'un endroit inconnu}}} {{{destination|vers un lieu inconnu}}}.
|#default= {{Name}} migrated from {{{origin|an unknown location}}} to {{{destination|an unknown location}}}.
}}
}}</includeonly><noinclude>{{Documentation}}</noinclude>

current coding for the Migrating Ancestor template:

<includeonly>{{Sticker
|image={{{origin-flag|Flags-23.jpg}}}
|imagetext=Flag of {{{origin|an unknown location}}}
|text={{Name}} migrated from {{{origin|an unknown location}}} to {{{destination|an unknown location}}}.
|image1={{{destination-flag|Flags-23.jpg}}}
|image1text=Flag of {{{destination|an unknown location}}}
}}</includeonly><noinclude>{{Documentation}}</noinclude>

lol, I am truly not a technical maven, so the variations on a theme are Greek to me (which I never studied).  wink

If you can point me to the final sticker, I will simply copy/paste it where appropriate, which is what I do already.  The language variations you have on the above are correct.

and https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Template:Migrating_Ancestor has been updated

This row has the coding you'd most likely want - you can change the images and "wheres" as needed:

{{Migrating Ancestor
|lang=fr
|origin= de France
|destination= au Canada, Nouvelle-France
|origin-flag= WikiTree_practice-4.png
|destination-flag= Flags-12.png
}}
Flag of de France
... ... ... a migré de France au Canada, Nouvelle-France.
Flag of au Canada, Nouvelle-France

Purrrrfect!  laugh  Works like a charm!

Nice work Liz! I have a feeling we're going to need to add language variations to more stickers before long.

I'm proud to be #1 in favor of this proposal (of the 3 required to make it happen).

I think this is definitely necessary in keeping with WikiTree's stated goals to be international.  We know it will be a long hard road to get there, but adding other language versions of this sticker would be a very easy first step.

I would also like to suggest that language options be added to other stickers that have built-in text.
by Gaile Connolly G2G Astronaut (1.2m points)

I see two ways to accomplish this:

  1. Add a new sticker, identical to the current migration sticker, but with the included text in French.
  2. Change the current migration sticker to include language as a dropdown option that lists the available languages.

 The second way has the added advantages of not needing to add to the number of stickers we have, plus can easily be done for other stickers that include text.  I'm sure that someone fluent in each language to be included will provide the text as the option is added.  Perhaps a language liaison to the template project could be designated for each such language.

There is already a built-in language selection - in the "I'm an English speaker" type of personal profile stickers.  If that could be used for miragting ancestors, that'd be great!

Melanie, would you consider violating your rule of only commenting on (instead of answering) questions just this once so you would be #2 of the 3 needed?  I promise it won't hurt too much<grin>

Support for proposals can be by comment, or so I was long ago told.

One only needs to say "I SUPPORT THIS PROPOSAL" for it to be valid.  cheeky

we have more than 3 already, so this appears to be needed and wanted.  I can supply translation to French, not up on the technical aspects of these babies though.

For reference - the languages widget (or whatever the correct technical term is) I mentioned in my first comment here is found on this page

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Template:Languages

Excellent idea Danielle. Thank you for proposing this.

Mel, doubt this would fit, as it's for living people's abilities in the field of written and/or spoken languages.

I'm not suggesting it would fit.

I suggested that as the ability to use language in a sticker already existed, it might be able to be adapted for your proposed use.

ah, ok, there are already various stickers that permit this, most of them have |lang=fr added in, like {{French Roots|lang=fr}}

This would not necessarily work with this, since depending on the countries, the nomenclature varies.  Migré de France au Canada / Migré de France en Allemagne ....

Possibly it should be set to be manually entered text, such as some of the occupation stickers, like {{Religion|image=ADWP-602.png|text=was a Nun.}} which can be amended in the text part, the image remaining the same.

I guess it will be up to the techies and the template folk to figure out which is best!  smiley

I am in favor of a French language migration sticker. A great many of my ancestors fall into this category. Translation using the "lang" option like a lot of other stickers would be my preference. Then it lends itself to other languages in the future.

I support this proposal.  I'm in favor of expanding options for languages other than English.  Thank you for the proposal, Danielle.
